Sir Henry M. Durand, British
ambassador at Madrid, has been
appointed Briitsh ambassador to
the United States.
The recently -completed Asheville,
N. (.k; Auditorilum and a private
residence, the two valued at $50,
ooo, were destroyed by fire on Sun
day. Insurance, $2o,ooo.
Percy S White, of Bonham,Tex.
one of the students at Washing
ton and Lee University stricken
with typhoid fever, died on Satur
day.
There were two big bank failures
in Pittsburg, Pa., last week. The
Federal National Bank failed one
day and was followed by the fail
ure of the First National of Alle
gheny on the next day.
John K. Brown, for 13 years
cashier of the Union bank, at Hol
land, Ohio, has been arrested at
San Francisco charged with embez
zlement. He disappeared from
Ohio in August and it was found
he was $1o3,ooo short in cash.
W. S. Love, of Savannah, Ga.,
who has been missing from his home
for several months, and who was
reported drowned, has been found
in Denver, Col., by the agent of an
insurance company in which Love
held a policy. Love says lie was
not trying to defraud the company
and did not seek to conceal his
identity.
Typhoid fever broke out at the
Virginia Military Institute at Lex
ington, Va., last week. Nine cases
were reported and the students were
furloughed for one month. Ty
phoid fever is also prevalent at
Washington and Lee, at Lexington.
The prevalence of the fever in these
two universities and in the tow n of
Lexington is attributed to lack of a
sewerage system in the town.
The entire summer resort of Vir
ginia Beach with its two large h.i,tels
cane near being destroyed by fire
on Sunday night. As it was five
handsome cottages were dlestroved
and many thouisand(s of dlollars lost
with no insurance, andl t hc whole
p)roperty would have gone had it
not been for the heroic wvork of the
crews from the three life-saving
stations who acted as firemen.
