FT>rp Is Horace Fletcher's diet ary gulden rule for all seasons of the year: Do not eat when you are mad or sad, only when you are glad. The researches of the scien tists have proved that our nerves play a most important part in our digestion. Many emotions ? actually stop short the flow of 3 gastric juices as effectually as ? an angry landlord might shut g oft the gas or water from the p flat of the tenant who had an $ gered "him. These emotions in P hlbit, or forbid, the action of Si certain glands from which should ? flow the needed digestive fluids. 9 If you are worried or angry over a business deal or home ?j trouble?over anything, in fact S ?you had better not eat at all 5* just then, for worry and anger are potent factors in stopping S{ the flow of the gastric juices. 2 Chew Liquid Food Too. $ 2 The increased amount of < 2 liquids consumed during the ? P summer months renders the t c following advice of Horace r q Fletche: of additional impor- ? tance at this time of the year. <J o The famous expert on foods o 8 claims that LIQUIDS g O SHOULD BE "CHEWED" 0 O ?that is, insalivated?as well O O as solids. He says: O ? "Adult man was not orig- g * inally intended tc take his * 0 nourishment in a liquid form; z 2 consequently all liquids hav- 0 0 ing taste, such as soup, milk, O o tea, coffee, cocoa and the n 5 various forms of alcohol, must g f be treated as sapid solids and ? o insalivated by holding them o 1 in the mouth, moving the 2 tongue gently, with straight 0 up and down ? masticatory o movements, until their taste be removed. 0 "Water, not having taste, needs no insalivation and is adily accepted by the fauc >0* ar K &* i 5 ar * Care of the Teeth In Summer. x Horace Fletcher is of the opin is ion that in the summer the dust X laden atmosphere is particularly }? injurious to the teeth. He says: "Dental defects cause far more J? disease than the public imagines. "In the dust laden atmosphere of towns the teeth are very lia ble to disease." he says, "and even when healthy are neces sarily dirtied. Some go so far as to advise all town dwellers daily to WASH OUT THE NA SAL PASSAGES AND TO GAR GLE THE THROAT; but. what ever may be thought of this, It Is certain that under existing dietetic conditions special means are needed in order to keep the mouth and teeth clean. * "When man fed on raw food %f this was not necessary, the food J? itself and the copious flow of K saliva, induced by prolonged mastication, effectually cleans tk ing these parts, but under pres fent conditions food tends to re main within the mouth, especial ly Iy between the teeth and in their X crevices, and therefore special If means are needed to remove it. ? "This is done by cleaning the g teeth and by rinsing the mouth \ after each meal." it $ 5 .'S ;? .n ? x i X % X c ? ? X X X X X X X X x i X X X X x x X Eat Little Meat In Summer. The amount of food devoured is IMMENSELY BEYOND any needs or demands of the phys ical system. The heat of the body must always be sustained at nearly 100 degrees. In sum mer we have only to combat a few degrees of lower tempera ture, but in winter by food and clothing we must raise the body heat from zero outside of us to 100 degrees above zeru inside of us. It plainly will not do to eat in summer as we do in winter, as much or of the same kind of food, if we consider heat alone. But In summer we live, as a rule, more active lives and pass off superfluous heat with great ease and rapidity, while the sur face of the body is cooled by perspiration. It Is probiible that most people digest and assimilate and dis pose of waste SO MUCH BET TER IN THE WARM SEASON that they eat more than in wiu ter and ought to do so. The kind of foods used should, how ever, be very unlike. It Is al most Impossible |q summer to eat too much of ripe fruits, while of meats very few should eat large amounts in warm weather. Meat should not be cooked in summer zs much as in winter. sims BOOK STORE. Has just received a shipment of Or angeburg, Orangeburg High School and Orangclwrg College Tenants.
