The Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings C. M. Tucker, Proprietor Subscription Price - - $1.00 Entered as second class mail matter at the post office at Pageland, S. C., under the Postal Act of March 3, 1879. July 29, 1914 A little rain and sunshine and a few old cans or barrels can cause enough mosquitoes to destroy the good effects of a ten days revival. The Department of Agriculture has issued an egg-candling chart which is intended to show the difference in fresh eggs and stale ones. Now, we need a law to compel the use of the thing. m Since the State Democratic convention met in Columbia in May and adopted the new primary rules requiring a new enrollment of the voters of the state, the newspapers have been untiring in their efforts to get the people to enroll. Rarely have we seen a paper published in the state that did not contain a notice to the voters that enrollment was necessary this year. The subject has been discussed on the s/reet, at the cross roads store, in the home and at every place where the people gather. If an}' man has failed to put his name on the club roll, he can't lay the blame on somebody else. If lie.has been too indifferent to enroll, he would have been in all probability too indifferent to vote in the primary. The vote *u.. A . --- - in me ivugusi primary will be several thousand less than two years ago, not because anybody has been disfranchised but because repeaters and dead men will not vote. ^ Candidates for the legislature will be pressed for expression as to their stand in the senatorial pie will demand that the candidates sav whether they are for Blease or not. There is no good reason for this. The candidates should have reasons for asking for the votes of the people, and if a man can give no excuse other than that he is for or against LJlease, he has no claims on the votes of the people and should he defeated. They should tell where thev stand on the important issues demanding legislature in South Carolina, and let the people know what to expect of them. If a man favors compulsory education and intends to vote for it, if elected, he should tell the people, and on the other hand, it he is opposed to it, he should say so. A candidate should not tell who he is so much as what he will do. Let the candidates tell what they favor, if anything, and what thev nnnrkco ^ WJ.-J/VL1V# Austria and Servia Will Fight. London, July 26.?Today's do- ' velopments appear to furnish new proof *hnt Austria is determined to make war on Servia. i The possibilities of a general 1 European war seem greater than 1 ever have confronted the pre- 1 sent generation. The Servian reply to the A us- \ tro-Hungarian ultimatum was < an acceptance of almost all the imperious demands, except that J Austrian officials shall partici- j pate in the investigation and fix \ the responsibility for the anti- ( Austrian propaganda. Sorvio <v proposed an apcnl to the Powers 1 at The 11 ague for the settlement * of that feature. Notwithstanding this humiliating surrender, which was more than Europe expected of the proud little Nation, the Austrian R Government today gave the Ser- \ vian Minister his passports, v> which may be construed as a h virtual declaration of war. n r n f *? Who Is W. F. Stevenson For what does he stand notor iously? vhirst, for economy. D< you know 'that congress in thi last two years has spent $35~,000 ()()().(X) on creeks and rivers an< harbors? This has not helpei the people of the Fifth Distric one penny. South Carolina' share of that money according to population would be $18,000 000.0<>. If they had put that 01 our post roads instead of it creeks and harbors and river every man in South Carolim would have a good road at hand During that term our whol< Stale envern merit tiac rnst r?n1i $20,000,000.00. We would hav< about two and a half times a much for our roads as it takes t< run the whole State government a :d i .stead of its being used !< benefit our roads it has beei dumped into creeks and river: and harbors, and almost none o it has been seen in South Caro lina. They have just passed i bill through the house carryinj $80,000,000.00 and the senate wil add to it. Stevenson says, cu down "that steal," as Ben Till man calls it and build roads t< the farmers' doors. What does ^tlic farmer sa: about this? Give Stevenson i chance, and he will do his besl not only to "put the Fifth distric on the map," but to put th< farmers of the fifth district 01 the map also. The Mission study class is go ing and doing good as it goes Information is one of our great 1 i -i * vsi ncuus una mis is among one of the best ways to get the information and get it first hand. Not long since we were talk ing to a good christian and in the conversation our friend spoke of Bro. A as being the kind of christian he liked. "Thai is, he puts his religion ahead ol everything else, while others aie prettv fair christians when it is convenient and does not interfere with their plans in any way." Tliis set us thinking and we have readied the conclusion that it is one of our troubles in church today, that too many fail to put Christ first. Jesus said "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6: 33; To the saved man this means putting Christ first in everything. Or putting things in their spiritual order, first things first and second things have their place. Giving Christ the preeminence in all things. We are glad to have an opportunity of being with the good people of Thompson Creek in meeting this week. It is a real pleasure to he with Bro. Purvis iind his people. We would ask in interest in your prayers that the meeting may be a great sue :ess for our Lord. Next Saturday 3:00 p. m. the Tieolinor will " mm. i < ^ ..... UW^III Ml YV U11U Plains.
