POETRY.
TH2 SOMG SPARROW.
Can you bear tlie sparrow in the'lano
Singing above the graves? she said,
lie knows my gladness, he knows my pain,
Tho' Spring be over and Summer be dead.
His note hath a chime all cannot hear,
And-none can love him better than I;
For he sings to me when the land is drear,
And makes it cheerful even to die.
?Tis beautiful on this odorous morn,
When grasses are waving in every wind,
To know my bird is not forlorn,
That Summer to him is also kind.
But sweeter when the grasses no longer stir,
And every lilac leaf is shed,
To know that my voiceful worshipper
Is singing above my voiceless dead.
Heavy Shoes for Ladies.?Winter
is coming and we desire to say a
few Moras to our lady readers about
clothing the feet.
When the celebrated physician Ab
ernathy, died, report said that, beside
a will of some interest to his heirs
in a pecuniary point of view, there
tfas found among his other effects a
sealed envelope said to contain the secret
of his great success in the healing
art, and also a rule of living, the following
of which would insure lonjrevO
O
ity.
A large pricewaspaid for thcscalcd
envelope. It was found to contain only
these words: 'To insure continued
health and ripe old age, keep the
head cool, the system open and the
feet warm."
Dry feet.are warm feet, generally,
if the system is healthy. To keep
the system healthy the circulation
must be good. The circulation is not
good without exercise and exercise
can only be really valuable' when
walking.., Riding in a carriage is no
exercise at all; it is merely inhaling
the air. This is very well as far as it
goes, but the lungs are never in full
play without the individual is walking.
Horseback exercise is vcrv crood and
is an. improvement on carriage riding,
but it is not the kind of health crea.
ting play of the musles nature demands.
It is action?action of the
entire body?and talking will only
procure it.
Now the ladies of Europe, particularly
those of England, understand
this thing. They walk miles per day
and if any of our pale beauties desireto
know how the English ladies keep
up their fine color, clear complexion,
superb busts, we tell them it is by out
door exercise walking in the open air;
filling the lungs with pure oxygen by
rapid movement on a sharp October
day when the sun shines brightly and
the clear blue sky above. This is
the secret of the rich blood of the English
women, and their almost univeij
sally fine looks and matronly beauty
at fifty when at that age Amcri ean women
are pale, sallow and wrinkled.

needed. Stout, well fitted calk-skins,
high gaiters neatly laced, will always
'set off' a pretty foot, and improve a
homely one. To guard that sensitive
portion of the human frame (for the
sole of the foot is keenly sensitive to
the changes from heat to cold or dryness
to dampness.) the boot sole should
be thick, and as well made as human
ingunity can do it. Then even in
moist weather, or in a rain storm, the
foot can. be protected;, that insured,
all is well with the body.

Boys Usixg Tobacco.'?-It is said
that there are no boys now, but the
following strong, sensible, good,
* sharp sayipg is designed for that portion
of the genus homo, known as
"Young America," who use tobacco :

ruined thousands of boys. It tends
to softening and -weakening of the
*
bones, and it greatly injures thfc
brain, the spinal marrow and the
whole nervous fluid. A boy who
smokes early and frequently, or- in
any way uses large quantities of tobacco,
is never known to make a man
of much energy, and" generally lacks
muscular and physical, as well as
mental power. -.We would particularly
warn boys, who waat to be anything
in the world, to shun tobacco
as a most baneful poison."
Pedestrian Feat in Savannah.
?John Shepherd, who attempted to
walk one hundred and twenty hours,
in Savannah, without rest or sleep,
became completely exhausted, and
fell insensible when he had walked
one hundred and nine hours and fifteen
minutes. Previous to this his
legs had swollen so that he was compelled
to have them bound round with
bandages, and his feet had burst
the stout brogans which he through
wore.
American intervention in Mexican
affairs is considered by all resident
foreigners in Mexico and by well-informed
Liberals to be only a question
of time. They say that Europeans
are unfitted for pioneers and settler
and that the Americans are the only <
people on the earth capable of restoring
peace to Mexico.

THE AUTOMATIC ORGAN.
In presenting the Automatic Organ, wo.
holdly announce the greatest triumph in musical
instruments of the age. During the
past half century, .the French and Germans
have manufactured reed instruments with
double bellows, and two pedals for the feet to
operate; but the want of the reverse, or exhaustion
bellows, (which is the only bellows
uscdinour instruments,) made it impossible
for them to produce the mellow, rich and mellow
tone foi"whicli our instruments are celebrated.
*
Another objection to this method of blowing
was, that both feet being occupied, no opportunity
was offered for the management of
the swell. Within the past two years, instruments
constructed on this European plan of
"double .bellows" have been manufactured in
[ this country, and to counteract this difficulty
(want of a swell) a lever has been projected
from the centre of the Instrument, to net on
the swell, and operated by the knee. The inconvenience
and contortion necessary to effect
I this object, are disagreeable enough-to a gentleman,
but to a lady thc^usc of such au appendage
is nearly impossible.
Our Automatic device obviates this difficulty
entirely, the simple act of blowing with
more or less force giving the desired increase
or decrease in the volume of the tone. We
predict for this invention a brilliant future.
MELODEON AND SCHOOL ORGAN,
For seventeen years the superior excellence,
of our Melodcons has not been questioned,
and for two years past the enoraiou&demand
has made it impossible for us to mcct our orders
promptly. With our increased facilities
wo feel warranted in assuring our patrons
that their orders will he promptly met, and
