^ >. SSSSSB5B5BBBBS5SSSSBSSHSB UEAVrOllT.m. c. DEC, l?. 1H74. ?Moses pardoned during the year, 450 I convicts. Mr. H. W. Wilkins has been appointed post master at Port Royal. EST" Judge Durcll has resigned. Why dont Packard follow suit, ^ The Governor has appointed J. C. Rich mond Pilot Commissioner for this port. Sammy Green has sold his horse and hnggy to Ed. English. Sammy goes in for | reform. t ?John B. Hubbard, JState Constable", > has been appointed Special Agent for the .[ ^ Treasury Department. k ?Alfred Williams is understood to be a a candidate for the Senatorsbip, to be vacated by Robert Smalls. ? = ?We had a very heavy white frost last night. Our devil says nary white in it, for its cold as fury. There are only twenty-three attaches in (* the House, against one hundred and seventy-five last year, none of them are from this county. |y The House proposed to reduce ? the price of money. Let them issue monf ey like they have bonds, and it will soon j oe cheap enough. ' The Fire Department has been ordered i out by H. M. Stuart, Chief, for parade 1 and inspection an Wednesday the 10th inst. We hope to see a large turn out of ^ all the companies. A member ot the legislature introduced I; a resolution to provide locks and keys for , the members desks It is not very likelj' the members will have anything to lock up, from present appearances. The Time table of the Railroad was changed Thursday evening by tele /* graph. No notice being given the express and passengers were left behind Friday morning, iue train leaving an hour earlier than usual. The legislature is bent on reform, it owes a $2000, gas bill and wont pay it. Senator Nash, says reform is all talk, lie ought to be set down at once as a Democrat and not a genuine reformer like all republicans are at present. , Mr. Mayo, Intcndant, has re-issued the town ordinancejforbidding the sale of lire -ft* "Works within the town limits. This ordIinance so long violated is now to be strictly enforced, and nronertv owners will r?v f -rf ? 1 X / J ? ? ameu, although the small boys may i "reject." N. B. Myers is rather rough on some of his fellow members. He offered a resolution which was adopted that, all reports 4 a from the Committee on Claims and Contingent accounts, shall be itemized, printed, and laid on the members1 desks one I day before being read. Jfc A man at Altman's Station last week . wishing to go to Charleston, waited two days for the Port Royal train to make a connection at Yemassee. The third day i he gave it up, and shipped his trunks by t express, mounted a mule and rode to Yemassee in time to catch the train. A colored man liviug near the Ferry t ( almost caught a whale last Saturday in -V Broad river. He hooked something supposed to be a 150 pound bass, and in his II endeavor to pull it into the boat it pulled him into the water. He concluded to , '' _give it up, and next time go fishing in a flat. The trains on the Port Royal Railroad are getting very uncertain. The mail arrives two or three hours late generally, fand Sunday, last the trainjadvertised in tha schedule did uot run at all. Many 1 biblical words were used with great force owing to the disappointment on Sunday, and one gentleman remarked that he would not attempt^to express his feelings, but he felt much as he did the Sunday he was obliged to remain over at Yemassee and sleep in a pigeon roost. To those citiaens among us who lost it cotton during the late war by capture ol t o the same, by the armies or civil authori' 'tics of the United State Government, an opportunity is now nfforded them to make ^ their claims before the proper tribunal al Washington. Mr. M. P. O'Connor ol .Charleston has for some time been asso ciatcd with Mr. W. Penn Clarke of Wa-h ington in the prosecution of such claims and are devoting much zeal and industry to their management. All claimant? j' mmt have their petitions filed on or before the 2-4th of the present month tc avoid bar of the Statute of limitation? and no time is therefore to be lost in prex" seating cases. We recommend all wbc ? have claims to have tho u attended to 01 they may forfeit the right ever to present them at a future day. # Meeting of the County Commfnnloner*. Tubaday Dec. 1st. POUT ItOYAIi AItOU8EB And now cometh on a pace the mo exciting contest of the year?of the yet do we say I Aye, of the decade. For the is now soon to be elected an Intenda and one or more Wardens to keep wati and ward over that tremendous congl meration of marble warehouses, brow stone front-lined avenues and grani quay9, known us the city of Port Royal. This is no political contest be it unde stood ; no case of Greene vs. Chambe laiu; but one where yankees, radical republicans, and.independents, conserv tives and * scsesh " are joined hand hand in the interest of protection of pro erty against the fierce and unscrupulo brigands, who owning nothing, wou ne'ertheless impose the terrible burden taxes on others than themselves. Ai tha stentorian tones, and grim laugh the warrior preparing to do battle f the right, reaches even to Beaufort, ai is heard high above the humming of t] busy gins. Irs. 'm- Gov. Allan's message to the Ohio Legto0 islature, and Gov. Chamberlain's inauguaa* ral address, are documents that will bear lie contrasting. The Ohio Governor gives st. t stical figures showing the honest management of the State finances and the he general prosperity of its great interests. The South Carolina Governor promises ir- for the future the reform, economy, and *r- honesty of which his State has expertis cnced so little.?Exchange. icr A question of grave importance that ;c- will have to go to the Supreme Court for tli decision results from the disagreement of a? Judges Bond and Hughes in the Peterscd hurg election cases. Judge Hughes pronounces the Enforcement act of 1870 nn'or constitutional, and declares that the cilicr, *en derives his right to vote in Stute id elections from the State, and cannot be d_ deprived of it by act of Congress. The bitterness of feeling in which that was passed lias so far passed away that the " question of its constitutionality can now IB* be considered without being uiade a politlr> ical bugbear. re nt A Georgia politician is known as " that :1> genial embezzler." Texas is full of mysteries. A manTwas n" put in jail in Bryan the other night, and tc the next morning he was found hanging to a tree a quarter of a mile away. r It is suggested that in building railI roads, the rails should be heated red-hot, ( so that the workmen may lay them down ^ rapidly. : in "The bearer of an iinpoitant temperU8 ance communication to this pap r, yesterday," says an exchange, "was industriously chewing coffee, id It is now marly two years since the of death of Mr. Greeley, and this season, for or the first time since that .event, his daugh- , id ters, Ida and Grabrielle, occasionally he make their appearance in public.
