The Great Fire in Charleston.
FURTHER PARTICULARS.
Yesterday was a gloomy day for Charleston.
?Business was universally suspended, and,
with one impulse, our community united in
giving sympathy and aid to the victims of the
great public calamity.
Our report, in our last issue, closed at quarter
past live o'clock cn yesterday morning,
when the majestic spire of the Cathedral had
just tottered and crashed heavily through the
burninc roof. From that fimo !?#? /lisnctor
may bo saiil to have assumed a new phase.
The flames leaped madly across Broad-street,
and, forsaking the business neighborhoods
which they had already desolated, they secined
to devote their whole fury against the private
residences which have so long been the pride
of the southwestern portion of our city. As
these beautiful homesteads succumcd, one
after another, to the resistless march of the
destroying clement, the scene was awful.
The fire advanced steadily onward, stopping
only, when, having reached the liver, it had
nothing more to burn. We give some notes
of the disastrous results:
THE SWEEP OF THE CONFLAGRATION. 1
The following is the course of the fire from
Cameron's rounary:
On East Day the fire extended, on the cast
side from the residence of Mr. J. S. Bird to the
corner of Market street, burning out Mr. Henry
Snn zcr, Jacobson and sundry others. On
the xvest side from Mr. (Icorge Kinloch's to
the southwest corner of Market street, inclusive,
was destroyed.
On I'ritchard street the property of Mr.
John Torrent, Mr. Tavel, Mr. Artopc, Mr. Cordray
ar.d others was consumed.
On Market street, from East Bay to Church
street, south side, was destroyed
On Anson-strcct cast and west side, from
Claussen's mills south, sundry buildings were '
destroyed, to Market-street. Claussen's fine
Flour Mills were most fortunately preserved.
On State-street, on either side, the Haines
spread destruction from Market to Cumber1

and many ocupants was completely destroyed.
Meeting street, on the east side, from the
Ice House near Market street, to Mr. Kcnne- I
dy's tailoring establishment, opposite the Mill's 1
II ouse, and from the .Theatre on the west i
side to the Mills I louse, is in ashes. This range
included the Circular Church. Institute Hall,
Theatre, Apprentices, Library, Palmetto Savings
Institution, Art Association, Charleston
Havings institution, ami the tine residences of
Dr. liodiigues, 1 >r. DeSaussure, and Dr. North.
The Mills House most fortunately escaped with
little damage.
Quecn-st. was laid in ashes from Dighon's
Stables, north side, cast of Meeting-st., to the
sohool of the Sisters of Mercy near Mazvck-st.,
and 011 the south side from Mcitzler's Globe
Hotel, to Mr. Jabez Norton's residence, midway
between Mazyck and Franklin.
The fine buildings owned l?y the sisters of
Meroy were most fortunately preserved by the
most strenuous efforts of the firemen, who blew
up several buildings for this purpose.
Archdale street, from the I nitarian Churehi
on tlio cast side, and from Mr. Thomas llyan's,
on the west side, to Queen street, was
destroyed.
King street from Ilorlbcck's Ally, on either
side soutoward, save the buildings on eaeli
corner, were destroyed?on the cast side to
the Quaker Meeting House, or. the west
side to Mr. Melcher's bakery on Broad
streeet.
Broad-street was destroyed?commencing
with St. Andrew's llall on the north side, to
the residence ot' I>r. \\ ragg, inclusive, corner
of Franklin street. In this range are included
the fine residences of Bishop Lynch, Geo. M.
Coffin, Mr. J. B. I ley ward Postmaster linger,
Miss Bowman, John Laurens, J)r. Mazyek,
Captain Kutlcdge and John Bonnell. On tLe
south side, the fire raged from Mr. C. F. Levy's '
opposite the < athcdral, to Mr. Seabrook,s ex- I
tensive west end, destroying all, save the house |
standing on the corner of New street, and Mr '
II uguonin's brick residence below Savage
street.
Mazvek street, from Queen to Broad, east
and west, is laid low.
Short street running iroui Mazyck street
to Franklin, was laid in ashes, including the
handsome residences of Mr. Middleton, Mr.
McKay, Mr. Gravoley, and Mr. Williams.
Logan street was entirely destroyed, except
one dwel'ing on .the cast side near Tradd.
New street and Savage street are left without
a landmark, save the brick chimneys of the
handsome dwellings which recently adorned
that section.
The residences on Tradd street, from Logan
to Savage, on either side, with Greenhill, Lime
house and Council streets, are, with one or two
exceptions, all in ruins.
