When last seen she was on her beam ends, with no water near her. If the "staff" continues to find out the bauks instead of the channels, the Louiy will still bare all the work to do or flieru will soon be work for wreckers. Ax Evb-witxesr. Magnificent Literary Fabric. Webster's Quarto Dictionary has passed through various editions, each an improvement upon and enlargement of the preceding, until it has culminated in :he present magnificent literary and inguistic fabric. The reputation of this work is not confined to America. We find it stated that in the Alexandre case, tried 1 n the Court of Exchequer at Wcstmin>ter Hall, under purely English law, no )tber dictionary, English or American, , ivas quoted or alluded to than this, rhe Lord Chief Baron, in his decision, pronounced the " Webster's Dictionary a vork of the greatest learning, reseach, tnd ability." Besides the numerous llustrations with which the volume is uterspersed, there are at the end sixtyeven pages of the most fiuished pictorial llustrations, representing almost every < oneeivable object in nature, science, and irt. It would be unnecessary, if we were :ouipetent to the task, to subject this ( vork to a critical analysis. Its reputation < s firmly established. It is built upon a ' ock, and can bid defiance to any petty i itorm that the critics caj raise.?llichnond Whiff. Confiscation. A good Joke is told of its passage in the house. STr. Peter Papln, the grand central superintendent of this enormous enterprise, was sppruacbed by one Sjvrry, who said that the bill could not poesibly go through the committee without some compensation for his (Sperry's) exertions in having it properly reported. Peter, with great readiness, and with his well-known lilwrality assured Sparry that he should haTe a check on s Columbia bank for five hundred dollars, the Very moment the bill was favorably reported. This was very- comforting to sperry. But u|K>n presenting bis check to the bank he was informed that they had no oae by the name of Peter Papin on their books. Thu check was a very nice check, but there was no money to meet it. Spcrry hurried to .Senator Smalls^ who had rather fathered Papin's bill, but Smalls knew nothing about it. Pspiii, when remonstrated with said: Veil, I had no money: I did promise you a check, and a chock you did have. If I did not do so my little bill would not have pass." Sjierry has been suspicious of checks ever since. Sheriff's Sale. John Foster Endorser, vs. S. 1L Wallace, Ex'cor.' 3. H. Wallace, in his own right.
