authorized and required to claim the exemptiot
from Confederate inilitaiy service of the offi
cers and members of both branches of the Gen
cral Assembly -of this State, and the following
State officers, to witi. Lieutenant-Governor
Judge* of the ^Courts of Lab' ft n'd Equity, At
tornoy-Gcncral and Solicitors, Secretary o
State, Comptroller General, State Auditor anc
two assistants, Treasurers of the Upper anc
Lower Division, Adjutant and Inspcetor General
and one assistant, Quartcmastcr-Gcncral,
Coinmissaiy-General, State Engineer and one
assistant, Aidos-de-Oainp to the Governor (not
to exceed one to each militia brigade,) Private
Secretary of the Governor ami hi* MWL- Sho.-.
ifts, Clerks of the Court, Ordinaries, Masters,
Registers, anil Commissioners in Equity, TaxCollectors,
President, Cashier, Rook-keeper,
and one Teller of the Rank of the State and
of each of its Branches, Ofiiccrs and Cadets of
Ihc State Military Academies, Professors Of the
3olith Carolina College, Superintendent, Physician,
and Keepers of the Lunatic Assylnm, and
Superintendent, Steward, and Teachers df th c
Asylum for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind.
Sec. 2. That the Governor be and iiu is here

soldiers' Families, (who are over forty-five

inch Deputy-Sheriffs as may be iudispOnsable

o exceed one in each Judicial District,) State

or each newspaper being published at the

and pressmen as said editor may certify

minting; the Chief of the Sou'li Carolina Hospital

Fire Departments of Charleston and Columbia,
Hid such artizans, mechanics and persons of
scientific skill, and other employees as may be
indir-ponsablc to the carrying on of tho inaiuifaetovies
and public work belonging to the
State; the professors and teacheis of all incorporated
colleges in the Slate; every minister
of religion authorized to preach according to
the rules of his eh in ch, and who was, on the
first day of May, 1SG1, midlist the passage of
this Act shall be regulary employed in the
discharge of his ministerial duties, and is not
engaged in any traflic.
Skc. 3. That for the proper police of the
country, the'Governor is hereby authorized,
render such regulations as lie may prescribe, fio
require the exemption from Confederate military
service of such persons as he may adjudge indisnnnsnblo.

of the State: Provided, That such exemptions
shall not exceed, in any District, one for every
two hundred slaves in said District: And ]>rovided,
further, That the rights of overseers now
having both Confederate and State exemptions
shall not be change] nor altered by the provisions
of this Act, nor shall such persons be
included in the estimate of tho above proviso.
Srcc. 4. That all officers and persons who
shall he so required by the Governor, pursuant
to tho provisions of this Act, be and they arc
hereby declared ro be exempt from Confederate
military service-during tho period for which
heir exemption shall be so claimed.

does not credit the report, which it thinks originated
in the fact that a number of the intend

and returning home in the Laurel

A salt lake has been struck near Grand Uap
id?, Michigan, at 700 feet from the surface.

Fleet drew off. Could not see that they ;
went west.
Wilmington, Dec. 24.?The bombard incut
of F'urt Fisher re opened this inoruitig and continued
furiously nearly all day. About three
b'clock the enemy landed about two and h
half iiiiles from Fisher, and continued to send
troops to land under a heavy fire, opposed
by our forces. Two brigades so far arc an
land.
Wilmington, Dec. 27.?An official dispatch,dated
ti o'clock p. m.j to-dav, says : The cr.einv

Fort Fisher is uninjured. The immediate
