OBITUAR "ST.
. Cap! H- E- ELLIOTT was mortally woumlod -near
Gaivos' Mill June .'Sd 18G1, and died June 5th. .
Phis sad announcement brought sorrow to the hearts
or his beloved family, and many admiring friends. No
purer patriot or nobler gentleman has lallen in this
.struggle. I desire to pay a feeble tributo to his worth
as a man, his skill as a sddior, and his devoted tidOlity
to his codntry andJauiily. An association of three
years in the capacity of friend and lellow Soldier,
amid the fatigues of camp, and the dangers of the field,
qualities mo to speak.
He was born in Jteaufort District -S. C.,. and was in
the thirtieth your ol' his'age. Alter the usual academic
and collegiate course he chose the profession of
Mcdieiiio. devoted himself assiduously to its practice
and was fast distinguishing himselt in it,. When the'
angry cloud Qf political trouble burst, and* South Carolina
called her sons to her defence,'he sprang to her
aid with all the fervor of a brave heart true to the
memory of those ancestors who had illustrated^ thd
fame of his native state from the sacred desk, in the
Cabinet, and on the tented tic Id. Thonoefortli' to him
there dould bo no lioiue. 110 ease, no quiet until the independence
"and nationality of his country were established.
To achieve these objects he devoted his lilo
and talents. In January 18G1 he joined the Palmetto
Guard of Charleston, conmlainled by Capt. Cuthberl,
mill .'It. mw-ii milon-il c.?i-i-ir?i? .?n llm iolniili mlin. I
cent to that city, lie was at this time a private in
that noble company whoso ranks now .shattered and
thinned uttest their gallantry and devotion to the cause
of liberty ; whose career is idcntilied with our history
iron) Sumter to the present time: and whoso hallowed
dead lie on the blood}- liclds of old. Virginia, lie
? passed successively from private to 1st Lieutenant, and,
:it thp death of the cluvnlrio Cuthbert, succeeded to the
command of Ins company. Although oltcn solicited
to enter llio Medical Department, where his ability,"
. impartiality, and truthfulness would1 lan e insured him
?u high position, lie prelei'ved the sterner duties of the
soldier, tlio responsibilities of the oflicer, and the storm
of battle. So strict was he in adherence to this principle
that, 011 being requested once by the commanding
oflicer of his Regiment to act as assistant Surgeon,
on the eve of an important engagement, lie respectfully
but positvely declined, and received a severe wound in
the conlliciwhicli followed. There are in every regifnent
certain men who are regarded as its bravest.stamu-hest
and best soldiers; men who from their character and
ability give it tone and standing. Among such in the
2d llegt., Kershaw's Brigade," Elliott stood prominent
and conspicuous No man could fail to respect him.
lie had the implicit confidence of all his superiors,
gnd subordinates, lie oteupied the extreme left of
his Regiment, and lus uommaiidiug officers ever lelt
that all was well there. Possessed of a good physical
constitution, and cheerful mind lie endured privations

patient endurance adorned alike the musket and the
sword. A soldier alono ear. properly appreciate the
meaning ol this compliment. As a soldier lie was en-*
during, cheerful and prompt: as an ollicer, capable,
strict, energetic: as a mall, candid, conscientous, and
just. I lis uamc was the synonym of courage, and
amid tho smoke of twenty bat tie-lit Ids his clarion
voice cheered and comforted his men.
Alas ! that ho should huyo fallen after having survived
so many dangers and endured so many hardships.
lie lbll with his face to the foe, and his heart
lull tif that patriotic lire, which had sustained him
amid all of his trials. I lis memory is a precious legacy
to his family and friends, who li: vo strong hopes
that their loss is his eternr.l gain. His family have
lost a devoted member ; his friends h cherished coini
pauion. and his country a brave*defender. And when
Carolina writes the record ol her noble death and
civets the monumental shall to commemorate ' their |
deeds, the name of Kllioll will stand forth btiglit and
beautiful* among those whom she has eotilrihuted to
"the defence of'her rights and Institutions'. K. |
