r f i ~ ?*-. The Baltimore Convention.' BLOODY VIEWS OF REV. H0J1T. J. BRECKINRIDGE.' The temporary organization of the Black Kcpublican Convention, which recently met in Baltimore, was cltcctcd by calling llev. 11. J. lJrcckiniidgc, of Kentucky, to the chair. After being conducted thither by Northern hands, he addressed the Convention. The following extracts from his speech will show its tenor: i "Dreadful as tlwy arc, these fearful truths rnii through the whole history of mankind, that whatever else may be done to give stability to an authority?whatever else may be done to give perpetuity to institutions, however wise,* however glorious?and whatever 11103- l)C ^1C philosophy of it, it has been found that the 011- 1 ly imperishable cement of all institutions lias j hecn the blood of traitors. Yankee Sharp Shooting.?The Mobile Rc<:* islcr says : As time wears on wo see that the Yankee approximates the Southern soldier in fighting qualities, is more easily managed, ami therefore more efficient, considered as a part of that great machine, an army. ]>ut, what is most . remarkable, the Yankee is liow a better shot than the Southerner, born, as it were, with a rifle in his hands. How is this miracle wrought? Easily enough. A sand bag is placed in a tripod, and on the bag a gun laid. The raw Yankee is brought up to this gun and made to snap caps until he can do so without winking. Next he fires blank cartridges until he stops flinching ainj shutting his eyes. When he is no longer afraid of a gun, he is taught to take aim anil fire from a lest, and ther. off hand.? After this comes the important business of .teaching- how to fire at long range.. This is done by placing a number of men at intervals ol tittv vartls until tlic extreme range .of modern weapons is attained. The recruit is made to examine each of these men careful tv, to ascertain liv tin: visibility oi' cerWiin aoeoutrcv incuts and the form of the hotly'what can and Vvhut cannot he seen at certain distances/ 'lie soon learns to elevate his sights in accordance with the greater or less clearness el' certain objects, andean tell with wonderful accuracy the distance of these ?Vbjects. J.very soldier in I'iek ct's IJivision deserves a medal with the inserip, tion : "Wo tried very hard to stop Pickett's men l*on% capturing the breastworks of tlic enemy, but could not do it." R. 10. Jj 1010, General. ' The Richmond Whit/ says : Extraordinary Gallantry.?When Gen. Lofe's congratulatory order to Gen. Anderson was handed to us for publication, wo declined , to insert it. It was so unlike tlxj General's style that we doubted its genuineness. But, for once, "Marse Robert" seems to liavo been I ovcrcomo by the extraordinary performance of his men. That an army "straggling to the front," contrary to orders, should spontaneously form a line of battle and drive the enemy from breastworks of the most formidable, character, is certainly a most extraordinary thing. The annals of warfare furnish no parallel. The exploit was so very unique and so unexpected, that. it. had in it all the element <-?!' an imnmiicrt joke, and us such it upset Gen. Lee and floored iiiiu completely. We should like to have seen his face when lie sat down to write the despatch to Gen. Anderson. We douht if the risible muscles were very quiet. Anderson and Pickett and all their hoys must have grown .two inches taller after they read it. "Noise or the 1 Jaiti.e A fa it Off."?Our attention was called yesterday at noon, to a noise as of distant cannonading. It consisted of very rapid "thuds," frequently so rapid as to run, into each other. At our request, the telegraph operator inquired of Atlanta whether cannonading was in progress, and was told that there wqs heavy iiring, and evidently "something had turned up" in the front. The distance on a right liuo is about ninety two miles.?Macon Con fed en te. ? N h , * ??? wJnfr?t"fc??
