Tiib Market Gardeners round London. ?The extent of gardens round London required to supply the two millions and a quarter of eaters will hardly be credited. Within a radius of fifteen miles of London, there are 200,000 acres of land in the hands of market w gardeners, all laboring for the London market: 10,000 loads of turnips, 10,000 sacks of peas, 20,000,000 heads of celery, 40,000,000 cabbages, and 100 tons of water-cresses, are said to he sold annually in Covent Garden market alone, to say nothing of the potatoes,- carrots, beets, onions, herbs of all kinds, &e., which are sold in immense quantities. ? ?1 Executive Departaieiit. Jly his Excellency John Laurence Man/tint7, Governor and Commander-in chief in and over the State of South Carolina. In consideration of tlic many blessings which Almighty God has bestowed upon the people o. this State during the past year, and especially for the preservation of general health within its limits during a season of unexampled mortality and suffering elsewhere?and in consideration of the existence of a pestilence which is now ravaging some of the fairest portions of our common country, making the people to tremble un? der its fearful desolations: I, John Lvcrexce Manning, Governor and Commander-in chief in and over the State of South Carolina, by virtue of authority vested in me, do issue this my proclamation, setting apart Thursday, the thirteenth day of October next, as a day of fasting, humiliation and prayer; and I hereby invite the ministers and teachers among all religious denominations in this State, to open their places of public worship on that day, for the people to assemble and humble themselves before their Maker, to return thanks for these marks of His favor, and entreat a continuance of I lis abundant mercy to us as a people; and furthermore, to _ beseech him to arrest the arm of the destroying wngel which iu other places is doing his work of death ; to comfort the widow, to protect the orphan, to give sustenance to the poor atnf needy, lo give healing to the sick, the spirit of joy for the heaviness of grief, and to show to all man kind the mercy aud salvation ot our uod. Ana I hereby further invite and request all people to lay a<*ide on that day their usual business and worldly avocations, and to observe with solemnity tlie religious rites which an- heroin mentioned.
