Your Mlaaloa.
a you cannot on the ocean
Sail among th? swiftest fleet;
Rocking on the highett billows,
Laughing at the storms yon meet;
Yon can stand among the sailors,
Anchored yet within the bay,
Yon can lend a hand to help them.
As they launch their boats away.
If yon are too weak to journey
Up the mountains steep and high,
Yon caa stand within the valley,
While the multitudes go by;
You can chant in happy measure,
As they slowly pass along.
Though they may forget tho singer,
: Tliey will not forget thc song.
If you have not gold and silver,
Ever ready to command.
If you cannot toward the needy
Reach an ever open hand,
Yon can visit thc afflicted,
O'er the erring you can weep,
You can be a true disciple.
Sitting at the Saviour's feet.
If you cannot in tho conflict
Prove yourself a soldier true,
If where fire and smoke aro thickest,
There's no work for you to do;
When the battle-field is silent.
You can go with silent tread,
You can hear away tho wounded,
You can cover up thc dead.
Do not, then, stand idly waiting
For some greater work to do;
Fortune ia a lazy goddass,
She will never come to you;
Go and toil in any vineyard.
Do not fear to do or care,
If you want a field of labor.
You can find it ANYWHERE.
Extraordinary Brotherhood.
A curious incideut took place at? a
recent execution of the murderer
Picot, at Marseilles. An unfortunate
criminal ascended the scaffold, fol?
lowed by four men, enveloped in long
robes of coarse tan-colored canvas,
their features concealed by hoods of
the same material, in which two small
apertures were made to enable them
to see their way. Tho Marseilles
population make way for them in
respectful silence, recognizing at once
these men as "Bourras Paillesen,"
that is, members of a brotherhood
that are bound by oath to perform
the most menial services for the poor,
and especially devote themselves to
attend on the condemned and bury
their remains. The evening before
an execution the members of this
brotherhood, sprung from every class
in society, meet in conclave and draw
lots as to which among them are on
the following morning to take posses?
sion of the scaffold. The executioner
and his assistants having accomplish?
ed their bloody work, retire immedi?
ately. The prior of the community
first recites the words, "There is no
longer a criminal here, the mortal
remains of a man created in the image
of God, and whom we are about
to inter." The brothers respond,
"Amen," undo the straps by which
the body bas been bound, place it on
? wide cloth, join the bead to the
trunk, and having made a deep bed
of bran and straw, proceed to sew up
the corners of the winding-sheet, and
place tbe body in the bier they have
Drought for tho purpose. They then
carry it to the cemetery, where the
almoner, whoso omeo it has been
to attend the criminal in bis last
moments, reads the service of the
dead.
General de Damas, Peer of France,
and Minister of War during the Res?
toration, was one of the confraternity,
and his stall in their chapel happened
to be next to that of Father Jerome,
a poor strcot crossing sweeper. The
vow is often made during a term of
peculiar affliction, or at a moment of
imminent danger. Once made, how?
ever, it is religiously kept.
A Danish silver coin, dated 1711,
perfect in its general appearance for
a coin, one hundred and fifty-four
years old, was found in the dirt in
front of City Hall, in Boston, on
Wednesday.

NEW "(ORK, JnlylL 1865.
MESSES. HEERING A Co.-GENTLEMEN:
Though the destruction of the American
Museum has proved a serious loss to my?
self and the public. I am happy to verify
thc old adage, that "It's an ill wind that
blows nobody good," and, consequently,
.?gratulato you that your well known
safes havo again demonstrated their supe?
rior lire-pruo? qualities in an ordeal of un?
usual severity.
The safe, you made for me some time
ago was in tho office of the Museum, on
tho second floor, back part of the building,
and in the hottest of the. lire.
After twenty-four hours of trial, it was
found among "tho debris, and on opening
it this d-y bas yielded up its contents in
very good order-books, papers, policies of
insurance, bank bills, all in condition for
immediate usc, and a noble commentary
on the trustworthiness of Herring's Fire
