LOUISV2L.IJ;, December 8.-At 7 o'clock k last evening, not withstanding the adverse ? weather, thc several Presby terian congrc I g?tions of this city assembled in thc I Second Presbyterian Church, to take action F in behalf of the Kentucky Board of Aid for Southern Pastors. Hamilton Pope was elected President, and Lev. li. Morrow, Secretary. An appeal was made to the audience to de? monstrate their earnestness in this cause, which was responded to in a spirited man? ner, resulting in a few minutes' contribu? tions to the amount of $4.000. This was highly gratifying, as the Work has hut foirly commenced, and testifies that the hearts <f this people arc truly in thc work of relieving the destitution of their breth? ren from all qiwirters of the State. Reports come to the Board that the Presbyterians are fully awakened to the importance ot immediate action, and a liberal support is confidently hoped for. The Board have perfected all the arrangements necessary to effect a prompt distribution of thc funds to its hands. Congressional Proceedings. "WASHINGTON, December ll.-In tho Senate, to-day. Mr. Van Horn, of Missouri, offered a re? solution, making au earnest declaration against a monarchical Government in Mexico, and instructing thc Committee ol Foreign Affairs, to inquire what means and measures are necessary on the part of thc United States to restore to thc Mexican people their right to a Republican Govern? ment. From Washington. WASHINGTON. December 9.-Gen. Danks and Speaker Colfax have, promised to lecture before the Negro Suffrage As? sociation. It is understood they take strong grounds in favor of negro suf i frage. Mrs. Swisshclm's new paper, to bc j started herc, will advocate negro suffrage. I The United States Supremo Court now ! has before it the following case: Tho i United Stales, plaintiff, in error, vs. Leroy M. Wiley, lt involves this question: "Does the President's pardon remit tho sentence of forfeiture of rebel property, and re? instate the rebel in all his rights thereto?"' The Southern members elected to Con? gress are still here. Some of them, be? lieving that it will bo a long time before they are admitted, contemplate returning home and remaining there tr.itil the door is opened to receive them. .. There was quito a crowd of visitors at the White IIouso, to-day, including mem? bers of Congress. The representatives from Ohio ana Kentucky were among those who were admitted to an interview with the President. Friday evening last, a wedding of an in? teresting nature took place in Washington, between Col. N. W. Saunders, of Louisi? ana, and Miss Cora V. L. Scott, (formerly Hatch.) of spiritualism reputation. Rev. John Pierpont, poet, performed thc mar? riage ceremony. ' WASHINGTON, December 10.-Thc Repub? licans are in a very anxious condition. Men of conservative and radical views are seen much in conference, and the result, doubtless, will be a letting down gradually from the Colfax-Stephens-Sumuer plat? form towards that of the President. Iii no other way can the Republican party be kept together. I believe Horace Greeley and Col. Forney are both working to this end. Whatever truth there may he in the re? cently published rumors respecting the President's .contemplated action with re? gard to the Southern Stales, it is well known that he acts in all cases affecting the restoration as they arise; and thus, while engaged in that work, is the best ex? ponent of his own policy, none being au? thorized to declare what course he will pur? sue in the future. WASHINGTON, December ll.--Leading Congressmen from New England had an interview with the President on Saturday. Tho latter expressed the belief that Congress and the Executive could har? monize on a plan of reconstruction. Ho expressed fears that, under the lead of Thaddeus Stevens, the House would tako a position which it could not hold. Prospects of the Tennessee delegation for early admission grow better every day. Heavy lobbving is going on to procure a renewal of the reciprocity treaty. A Senate caucus was held this morning on Stevens' joint resolution, without any result.. Another will be held this after? noon. Thc resolution cannot pass the Se?alo without amendment. Official advices received to-day from Mexico arc favorrble to the Liberal cause. The Imperial troops are constantly falling back towards the city. A Washington special correspondent tele? graphs to Forney's Press as follows: "The Union members of the Senate will hold a second caucus or. Monday morning, at 10 o'clock, for the purpose of consider? ing thc reconstruction resolution offered by Mr. Stevens, on Saturday evening, the 2d of December, and adopted in the House on Monday, after the election ?d' Speaker Colfax. So ne ambiguity in thc resolution will necessitate a change, and a number of Senators are themselves in doubt whether tho Senate ought to concur in its general scope and object. There seems to be a de? termination to stand by the President among the Republicans in Congress. His message has given such general satisfac? tion as to secure him the confidence oven of thoso who do not agree to all his sug? gestions It may be said of the President that he is the most successful of our states? men, because he has presented the most generally acceptable pian for the solution and settlement of our national disturb? ance."
