As we have seen various conflicting
statements in reference to the move?
ments of Mr. Mitchell, we copy the
following from the Richmond Enqui?
rer, which may be relied upon : "This
distinguished gentleman, who came
to this city after his recent release
from confinement -in Fortress Monroe,
visited Washington city a few days
ago, ?md after a very short sojourn
there, returned to this place and im?
mediately took passage for New York,
'?n his way to France. Wo are not
advised as to whether he leaves this
country permanently or only tempo?
rarily. Whatever may be the case,
we are sure he carries with him the
good wishes of all our citizens."
Some idea of tho extent of the
oyster trade may be formed from the
fact, as stated iu thc newspapers of
Norfolk, that the shipments of oysters
from that city amount to between
1,200 and 1,500 barrels each trip of
the steamers, and about the same to
Boston, and the two lines of Balti?
more steamers take daily an average
of about 1.000 barrels.
