DROWNED or EATEN BY TIG cits.-The
Ensrhsh papers give the particular!? o?
thc- loss of thc American built ship
Eagle Speed while on her way with
four hundred and ninety-seven coolies
from Port Canning to Deraarara. The
wreck took place near Halliday's
Islani, August 22, and the fatal re?
sults are thus described :
Three of tho Eagle Speed's boats
were launched, manned by the crew.
Including the coolies, who threw
themselves into the water on hen
cooos. the boat saved one hundred
and silty-nine, and all the Europeans.
Captain Hopkins' boat made five
r ips. but the others were soon smash?
ed ; one of them had at half-past
twelve brought off the Captain, whom
his own crew refused to help
The steamer Lady Elgin, which was
near, left for ^ort Canning ; no hint
was given to three hundred miserable
wretches who were sinking to launch
the ship's cutter, which had not been
used, though the one European left
and five negroes did so, and with
thirty coolies were afterwards found
by the steamer. The ship continued
to ?oat all that night, and did not
sink till seven on Wednesday morn?
ing, justifying the opinion of Captain
Hopkins, " .'Considering thc rate at
which the ship was sinking, I was
sanguine that we would have succeeded
in getting the greater portion of the
coolies out."
Two steamers were at once sent
round from Calcutta, and the Lady
Elgin returned from Port Canning.
They found three coolie lads on the
mast of the wreck, and saved about
sixty more who had floated to Halli?
day "is and Butcher Island, where the
tigers are said to have destroyed some.
The coolies assert that the ?asi Eu?
ropean attempted to fire the ship.
Cf the four hundred and ninety-seven
coolies, two hundred and sixty seem
to have perished on that terrible
Wednesday morning, or afterwards !
in the jungle.
BUSINESS IN NBW ORLEANS.-The |
New Orleans correspondent of the
Mobile Advertiser says :
Business is becoming quite brisk,
and the city looks very much as it did j
in the month of August. The re?
ceipts of cotton are large, and every
steamer that comes down the river
brings a full cargo of western pro?
duce. Several eargoe* of cattle h-vre
L+tely arrived from Texas, and. one or
two cargoes have been brought down
the Mississippi. There have boen
three arrivals of foreign whips, bring?
ing wines and brandies, and foreign
dry and fancy goods. The opinions
of mercantile men differ materially HS
tc; our future prospects, some thinking
be present season of prosperity will
hist but a short time, and tuen bo fol?
io wed by a monetary and commercial
crisis ; others believing we have en?
tered upon a career of unparalleled
financial success. The city is cer?
tainly looking np at the present mo?
ment, and it is to le ho;-xl we. may
have rio worse times in the future.
Speaking of business, I am reminded
of the scarcity of lumber and its un?
commonly high price. A large num?
ber of buildings axe wanted immedi?
ately-both stores and private dwell?
ings-bnt thc high price of lumber,
and all kinds of building materials, as
well as the want of skilled labor,
makes it almost impossible to build
ut this time.
Th?' NcUionc? lat^lli(jen--r says: Al?
fred Lee. a well-known and respecta?
ble colored mau, long engaged in this
city as a feed dealer, and whose for?
tune is considerable, is said to have
purchased the elegant mansion on H
street, lately occupied bv the British
Mini; ter.
