The Fenian movement continued to
cause some apprehension. A meeting
had been convened in County Cork
to consider what steps are to be taken
in view of the progress of the Fe

The London Times says that in the
abse*nce of precise information con?
cerning Fenianism, it is impossible
to determine what significance is to
be attributed to important movements
of members of the order, but the
amount of repre-ssion will be very
slight, as the feeling of dissatisfac?
tion is entirely eonfined to the lowest
class of Irish people. The channel
fleet has left Portsmouth for the Dish

do wjth its movements.

TIKED OF FREEDOM.-"We predicted
that the negroes who were renting
houses and trying to support them?
selves, would, in many instances, soon
get te> the end of their row, and be?
come involved. A woman we've long
known, and' who, in Confederate
times, ^ lived sumptuously and paid
good wages to her master, called upon
us on ?uesday in great distress. She
offered to sell " herself back into
slavery in order to pay nearly a hun?
dred dollars rent, accumulated against
her, and in order, too* to secure a per-?
manent home, froe from the anxieties
and troubles she Lad experienced
since she became free ; she was tired
of freedom. She has found it, by
sad experience, utterly impossible to
provide herself with the common
necessaries of life and meet her rent. |
Now she'is fearful that her landlord ?
will deal harshly with her, and is try- j
ing to borrow the resit money, even I
offering to become a slave again. She ;
a?N>ed with' us that the people gene- ]
rally were far better off, in a pecuni- j
arv point of view, last, year than at i
this time.? Then, everything was j
! enormously high, but money, such as
it was, was easily earned oisborrowed; !
now prices are low, with money searcc
and labor not in general demand.
Her case i's not an isolated one in this j
city or in the Southern States.
