Thc Encajas of Oadu.li P. Benjamin.
Nsw YOEK, August 3.-The World's
cavana correspondent -gives *an ac
.oujit of Judah P. Benjamin'3 escape
. vom the rums of the Confederacy. He
.aya Benjamin separated from. Davis
carly in May,, near Washington, Ga.,
for the purpose of making his way to
Nassau and Havana from soins* point
on the Florida coast. He was to at?
tend to some public business at the
posts, andth?n rejoin the President
in transmission via Matamoras and
Texas. He traveled directly South
through Georgia and Florida,' on
horseback, disguised as a farmer in
search of land, without exciting or at?
tracting attention, till he reached the
lowor side of the penin.ula of Florida.
He was informed no boats could be
found on the eastern coast, and went to
the gxilf shore, where, after a month's
delay, he succeeded in getting a ship
yard boat lind two men who were will?
ing to risk their lives upon the sea in
it. The open boat was about fifteen
feet long, in which they coasted the
peninsula till they reached ono oi' the
keys of Florida reef, where they suc?
ceeded ip procuring a boat somewhat
larger, in which they put' to sea to
cross the gulf stream, and fortunately
reached Bordes upon the banks after
a passage* of sixty hours.
Oh the Kith day of July, after an
unsuccessful attempt to reacli Nassau,
in which he was baffled by head winds
and heavy weather, he put back to
Barnes, and on Friday, the 14th, tho
sloop foundered thirty miles from the
nearest lan ch The vessel went down
:..o rapidly that he with the cre**?, had
barely time to -jump into a skiff in tow
o? tile sloop before she sank. In thia
. boat,-with u light mast, sail and com?
pass, and .only provisions of boiled
rice .-which the negroes had cooked for
breakfast,-?in this leaky and over?
loaded boat, and having tint one oar.
1 hey made f or laud, and, as the weather
was calm and no vessel in sight, by
dint of energetic sculling they easily
leached the lighthouse. In a vessel
from that point Benjamin reached'
NaSseu and Havana. His whole trip
has Occupied the best part of three
liiQRths out of which thirty days have
been passed at sea, in miserable open
bout.-.. .
