THURSDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 12, 1865.
A New Cotton Press.
The following, which wo clip from tho European
Times ot tho 23d ult., may he of interest to many
of our readers :
On tho 19th, a public exhibition took placo at
tho engine work? of Messrs. Rontlcdge & Omman
ney, Salford, of Asheroft'B patent combined steam
and hydraulic cotton prCBS, with revolving boxes.
In thiB now form of cotton press a combination of
-team and hydraulic power is brought to bear
npon the cotton to he compressed, in a 6implo hut
effective manner. Tho entiro apparatus stands in
a space 35 feet high, 14 feet long, and 12 feet
hrond, and consists of a hydraulic press under the
usual baling box, a steam ongiue being placed
nbovo it, which gives motion to tho whole. A se
cond cotton box is placed iu a position adjoining
the first box, and is attached thoroto with brack
ets, which revolvQ round ono of tho columns of tho
press and aro supported by gun metal balls, thus
reducing tho friction to a small point. The two
boxes are of cast iron, strongly ribbed, and are
planed interiorly to a perfectly true and smooth
surface to avoiu friction during tho operation of
pressing. Tho second box is thus outside the
framing* of the press, and is being tilled with cot
ton during the process of pressing and hooping
the bale in the other liox. As soon as that opera
tion is completed the two boxes aro swung round
rcry easily by two men until tho second takes tho
place of the first halo within the press apparatus,
the operation being very similar to turning a loco
motive on a railway turn-table. Tho application
of the steam and hy?lraulic powor is produced by
the action of a .steam cylinder, at the head of the
press, moving a strong" cross-head, to which arc
attached lour hydra*?Uo pumps, two largo and two
-mall ones, having the full stroko of tho cylinder.
Tho largo pumps continuo in operation until tho
cotton is compressed to within a fow inches of its
final point, after which the small pumps complete
the operation of pressing a bale of Egyptian cot
ton of 400 pounds. The time taken to* pr?s s and
hoop a bale was four minutes, the usual time in
hydraulic presses In .Egypt being about _flucu
minutes.
Tho advantages claimed for this press are the
* rapidity of the rise of rain, in eoiiee-pjonco ?>f the
first few feet of tho rise being made byBtcamonly,
after which, when greater pressure is reejuirod,
tho hydraulic power comes into force, the total
rise only occupying about forty-livo seconds, and
tho timo lor the fall of the ram is twenty-live
seconds. Having two boxet, ono is be ng filled at
tho time the halo in the other is being pressed
and tied; on tho completion of one bale tho other
box is easily moved under the press, in conse
quence ot tho b<ixca revolving on ?mo of the c?il
u umns of tho press: great saving of time, in conse
(menco of the quiote riso and fall of the ram, and
tho construction of the revolving boxes; saving of
froight, from tho groat density to which the cot
ton is pressed, viz: from 23 to 30 lbs. to the cubic
foot, against about 11 lbs., as obtained by the or
dinary liydraulic press iu Egypt; saving oflabor?
from tho' symplicity of tho press tho whole of the
. .;.., pressing can be managed by one man, who, with
_ lever, regulates tho working of tho press, in the
place of tho number of men required to work the
ordinary pumpe, presB, and gearing in Egypt; and,
finally, the saving of fuel is estimated at ono
fourth, in conscqticnco of the arrangements of tho
working part of the press and pumps and steam
power to work tho press being combined in one
machine.
