DAILY NEWS.
SATURDAY MORN-NO.ItSEPTEMJlER 16. 1865.
"local matters.
The STEAMNiirp Quaker City.?TIi?h fino atoamer
leaves Brown'? wharf tbia day at 3 o'clock, P. M.
The Weather.?Tho thermometer in our offico
ha? been standing bo long at ninoty degree?, and
there ia at thin time ho little danger of its falling,
that wo havo drawn the nail by which it was sus
pended.
The Mail to Flobida and Intermediate Points.
Blesara. Archibald Getty A- Co., of tbia city, have
received information from Washington that their
proposition to carry the mail from this port to Fi
lalka, aomi-wcokly by atoamcre, touching at Sa
vannah, Darien, Brunawick, St. Marys, Jackson
ville, Mandarin, and Picolata, lias been accepted
by tho Post?nico Department, and their lirat
steamer, tho Helen Getty, will leave hero on the
20th iiiBt. for the above places. This lino is of
great importance to tho trade of this place, as at
present wo aro almost without any communication
with tho points touched at, whic'.i beforo tho war
added quito a respectable business to our mer
chants' trade.
The PaosrECTS of the City.?A day or two ago
wo touched upon the exorbitant rents that aro
now demandod by householders, and at tho same
time w-c mentioned the great scarcity of stores, as
well as residences, that at present exista in
Charlcaton. Since then we havo conversod with
several on the topic, who believe, with us, that it
presages a largo and heavy business during the
forthcoming winter, which, if correct, will be tho
commencement of one of the grandest commercial
careers thatlins ever been experienced by any city
in the Union. The reason for this riso in rents we
presumo to bo the influx of persons from othor por
tions of the country, who have como among us
with tho intention of entering into business per
manently, and making our homes their homes; and
although our- people cannot sec where that busi
ness is to come from, or what is to make it or sus
tain it, "still they come," and with every variety
of gooda fill their Btorca and warehouses. Some
of them havo already been emptied and refilled,
and we believ?-?, if there is truth in eyesight, that
many arc undergoing that process every day.
Tho truth is, that for four years we have been
an inactive and inert people, with so little trade
among ns that wo have nearly lost that aptitude
which continual work had given us, and that also,
with the great troubles which tho war brought
upon us, has destroyed the capacity which we
possessed previously. These facts, no doubt,
causo many of uh to look with filmy eyes upon the
dark side of events, which prevents them seeing
any ray of light until almost blinding brightness
breaks upon them. On the other hand, they who
have come as now settlers among us have not L?r?eii
horno down with troubles, nor incapacitated
through a want of business, or enervated through
idleness, for trade with them increased and more
activity was created by the breaking out of the
war. Their visten bright as ever, their spirits
not depressed at its continuance but elatod at its
conclusion, they looked about to find some new
spot or spots less populated than their own, where
they could pitch their tents as dwellers, and im
prove and benefit by their labors. As a people,
their sagacity in matters of business is beyond
that of nny nation of the world, and their advent
among ua picsignificd a commercial prosperity
unsurpassed by any existing before. Time and
our oflbrts will dove-lop resources hitherto uu
thought of, which will give ample employment to
all; and we would suggest to those who have not
been fortunate bo far in obtaining situations, to
kcopup a stout heart but fora little time longer,
and then- most ardent wishes must be gratified.
The Row on Thursday Afternoon_Fromstntc
menta uip.de to ua, it seema, at one fimo of the
afternoon, there were serious apprehensions of a
great riot; and but for the activity of tho officers
and mon of the U. S. Police connected with thiB
Department, ill consequences might have resulted.
The thanks of tho citizens are, therefore, due to
them.
The EniToniAL Department of the News are
under obligation to Mr. Jos. J. B. Fbey, of the
"Central Ice Cream Garden," for the truly choice
and recherche refreshment sent them last evening.
After the laborious duties of the day, such kind
and thoughtful remembrances are particularly ap
preciated. Wc recommend all our friends to pat
ronize thiB elegant establishment. A promenade
concert will talco placo at the Garden on George
street on Monday evening, tho 18th inut.
Messrs. Trout & Aieesdury advertise, in this
day'a issue, tho steamer t?cn. Sherman for New
York, to sail on Wednesday next. Shippers who
wish to send by a good steamer, at reasonable
freights, will do well to call on them, at No. 20
Cumberland-street.
Louis Cohen, No. 218 Kino-street.?This estab
lishment is not only one of the largest dry goods
houses in the city, but it contains a variety unsur
passed in any othor store. Tho articles which fill
its shelves havo been ?elected with the greatest
care by experienced judges, and customers are
never dissatisfied with their purchases; in short,
auch efforts aro always made to please those who
call upon hiin, that a second visit generally fol
lows a first purchase. With tho ladies especially,
the goods at this house arc a great attraction; and
tho courtesy and general attention they receive
from those whoso duty it is to attend to lady cus
tomers, is always of tho politest and most gentle
manly kind.
Aisiar's Perpumbby. ? With the multitudinous
business that ia always being transacted in an
apothecary's establishment there is gonorally
somo articlo that receives a little more attention
than others. With Mr. Aimab, Perfumery has al
ways boon a specialty, and wo expect ho baa de
voted more attention to it than any other man in
tho South. Wc appeal to the large number of la
dies who havo patronized him for tho truth of this,
and will provo it by tho many who will call upon
him after reading l?a advertisement in to-day's
issue.
The attention of our readers is called to the
advertisement of Coal aud Building Materials, by
H. F. Baker & Co., who are prepared to supply
tho public at Zoio prices.
. SES! t,?avei*lino.?Penny trains are now "an
institution in London. Thoy run early and late
on the underground railroads. Tho working-man
descends into a spacioua subterranean depot, woll
-lighted, in ono part of London, takes his Seat in a
third-class 'carriage " and, for two cents, in ten
minutes la landed miles away, in another part of
London, whither, by ?bus" would havo cost him
ten cents and an hour a ride. In this way tho m?
chame, m his protty cottage in tho country, or in
a distant, street, is really closo by hia work- and
ono great ovil in a largo city checked in part!
