DAILY NEWS. FRIDAY MORNING, SEPTP-_iBEiri_718G5. LOCAL MATTERS. Cultivation of tue Tea Plant in Gkouoia? Mr. YV. Jones, in a communication to tho "Savan nah Baily Herald," of last Tuesday, montions that ho received from the United ?taten Patent Oflice in 1860 iifty tea plants about four inehea high ? nursed them very carefully in pots for ono year, -ind then planted them out where ho intended them to remain, and on tho second year they com menced to flower and produce seed. At this timo they aro from five to six feet high, and six or scvon feet in diameter, and he has been making toa from them for tho past three years, in small quantities. After the third year they require no culture, and become so hardy as not to be affected by adverse neasonB. Mr. Jones is quite enthusiastic on the introduction into the Southern States of this valu able plant, and offers to furnish with seed or small plants any one wishing to commence its cultiva tion. Somo years ago a gentleman undortook the raising of tea in the upper part of this State, and succeeded admirably; in fact, it waa with him an entire success, which wc believo was interrupted by his death, there being no one after him to bo ?tow the care and attention upon the cultivation of the plant which ho thought necessary, and ivliieh ho gave it. It was with him a specialty, and while others wero devoting all their energies, and employing nil their force upon cotton and othor products that experience had long shown them tvas a paying business, they wore not inclined to go with him into what they called an experiment, which they presumed would for a long time bring no return, and consequently he was not sustained by them. But now the condition of affairs is very much changed?cotton will be no more the great staple?tho want of hands to work it continually willmalje it scarce, ami if we can find a plant that will give a good yield with little field labor, we should cultivate it and make it advantageous to ?s. According to the statements of Mr. Jones, made from his own experience, the article requir ed ?b tea, which can be grown wherever cotton is cultivated-, and wo would suggest to our agricul turists with whom labor has become limited, a trial in the rearing of this important and invalu able plant. New YOBS Packets.?The sehr. Mary Stedman, Of the Merchant's Line of New York sailing vos e?is, arrived here yesterday with a large and val uable cargo, consigned to Mr. William Roach. This gentleman, previous to the war, was connect ed with the house of H. MlBBBOOM &, Co., the ngcuts of the New York Steamship line. His well known integrity and business capacity has Beeured him hero the agency of the Merchant- Line of schooners, which was known before the late -troubles as McCkeady'.s line, and which was com posed of first-class vessels, well fitted out, nnd commanded by able seamen. The schobnor B. N. Hawkins, which is the next vessel duo from New York, is well-known here, and is commanded by Captain WyatT, a name whieh all tho old friends of thio line will recognize. The office of Mr. Roach will be, for tho present, at tho north corner of Boyce ? Co's South Wharf and East Bay, in the second story. Almost a Row. ? Yesterday afternoon, at tho corner of Church and Chalmers-streets, some black and white soldiers came into collision, but, after the interchange of a few rocks, they were separated by a white officer. The negroes fell back to their quarters on Adger's wharf, and al though nothing of a serious character occurred -afterwards, the polico were kept in motion and the citizens in commotion. Prom what we saw, John Barleycorn and Dr. Otard were evidently about. Prentlsg Types?Mr. A. J. Bobee has laid upon our table " Specimens of Printing Types, Orna ments, Borders, &c, from the Typo Foundry and Printer's Emporium of Haq.ui & Co." The types of all kinds, borders, cuts, ornaments, rulos, &c, Ac, which aro displayed in this book, are of the most beautiful description. Proprietors of print ing offices would find an advantage by examining it. Mr. A. J. Burke, of our city, is the agent of Messrs. Hagab & Co., and would bo happy to re ceive orders for any kind of printing material. Ho eau bo found at T. C. Jowrrr'a printing ounce, King noar Calhonn-street. TiN-WAnE.?Among tho many wants of the housekeeper, for several years paat, there were none felt so acutely as that of proper tin utensils, both for the house and kitchen. How many ubo ful articles were improvised from injured things thrown by, in tho last four years, none will know but those whoso inventive genius enabled them to manufacture such articles as wero wanted for the time. What inexpressible pleasure would havo been derived, in those days, had such nn advortiBomcnt appeared from Mr. David Babuow, as tho papoi of this morning contains; and wo therefore advise housekeepers and otLera to pr?vido themselves at once, at No. 153 East Bay, so as to provide against future accidenta or contingencies. Custom House.?Dr. F. M. Robertson, having received his commission as Inspector of Drugt for the Port of Charleston, entered on his duties yesterday. The Day Book_In the columns of our papei will bo found tho advertisement of this sterling vnluablc New York paper. It has long been con sidered among us (with whom there is a largo cir dilation) as ono of the most reliablo buuiness pa pei-8, and, aa an independent organ, not to be anr .passed. See advertisement. We would call attention to the advortiaement in another column, of a School abont to be openei by tho MiBBca Marshall. They wero educated at a seminary of high roputation, and are, no doubt well qualified to impart instruction to others. W< wish them success. Tue Savannah Baily Herald, of tho 12th inst. ?ays : Baily Mail to Cliarleslon.?Tho public will hi -gratified to learn that thePostmastor-Qenoralhai ordered tho mail route No. 5776, via Charleatoi and Savannah Railroad, connecting with Jackson boro* depot, Aahcpoo Ferry, Groen Pond, Blui House, Balkehotcheo Bridge, Pocotaligo, Graham ville, Hardccvillo and Bridgo Sito, daily, botwooi Charleston and Bavannah, each way, to bo opened nnd that tho Railroad Company intend to put tin routo in operation at once. This will be a vori groat accommodation to tho public. Sympathy Fon Mb. Jeffebbon Davis.?Apotitioi has been got np in Texas requesting the venerabli ex-Governor Bubnett to procoed to Wasningtoi to intercede with Prosidont Johnson in behalf o Mr. Davis. It is signed by tho oldoat and moa experienced men of that State, having among it numbers thoso who were in tho Texas Conventioi of 1834 and 1886; men who fought at San Jaointo and othor famous battles, and ono among th number was a colonist who went out undor Ana UN.
