DAILY NEWS.
SATURDAY MORNING, 8BPTBMBBB. 9. 1865.
LOCAL MATTERS.
?Idlitart.?It will bo soon by an order which
apposrs in our paper to-day, that Brovct Major
General OOABLSS Dsvsm assumes command of
ibis District.
A Gkkkuous Ofpeb.?Tho South Carolina Rail
road Company, au also tbo Northeastern Railroad
Company, have both offorod, with commendable
Jkindncss, lo convey to and from Columbia tho
gentlemen elected to tho Convention.
Tni: Hasboii Master.?Capt. Smm.i-v P. Toa
IfER, who was tbo Harbor Master at thia port be
fore tbo war, has lately boon roappointed by tho
military authorities here. Ho took possession of
bis office and commenced hit* duties yesterday.
Ateleobaphic dispatch has boon received which
states that tho steamship Granada, of tho Levar
line, left Now York on Thursday last, and will
consequently arrive boro on to-morrow.
Trade? The stcamabips from tho North which
liftve arrived bore lately have all brought largo
and vnluablo cargoes, and, in some instances, have
bad to turn away freight at Now York, so great
Was the press for room. Our grocery doalers are
doing an cxcollont business, but aro preparing for
a much more extensivo trade, which will undoubt
edly spring up with tbo opening of tho railroads.
On the Bay, wo notice, tho following grocery
bouaca arc open, and are rccoiving large supplies:
Mesera. 'Ihaddkcs Steeet, Mauscukk <fc Co., D.
Barrow, DuncK&rviin <fc Mo?tett, Conner & Co.,
A. Canale, J. & F. Dawsom, B. O'Neill, H. Klatte
& Co., Bollmann Brothers, P. H. KKaLEB., A.
Bibchoi'f, J. N. BOBSOX; on Haync-strcot, Qeo. W.
Williams & Co., W. H. Cuafee; onMocting-Btrect,
Oeo. W. Glass & Co., Rknnekeu & Gixiveb, and
H. Bischoit.
On all those streete stores are being constantly
refitted. Among those to be shortly oponed in
the store formerly occupied by Mesar*. Simons
Bbos., on East Bay, which ba8 been leased by
Mr. IL Gerdth, aa a grocery establishment. Mr.
H. BjSOUOIg baa purchased, and is fitting up, the
large ?tore on East Bay, near Cumberland-street,
formerly occupied by McKenzie, Oaoow & Co. It
will make a roomy and moat capacious grocery es
tablishment. There are others deserving of no
tice, which wo will Hpeak of in a future article.
The Weather.?The days and nights at present
nro intensely warm. The pleasant winds, which a
short time ago partially cooled the atmosphere
at tbo early and lota part of the day having dis
appeared, there is a continuation of boat which
completely enervates ?'.ml Weakens the system.
The feeling of langour induced by this excessive
warmth must be distressing to those who have
much out~door labor to perform, but who must
put up with it until S change takes place, which
will be when wo have a rain. It is quite dry now,
and the few clouds we see give no indication of ap
.proacbing showers.
New York Steam L.ine.4.?The steamship Gra
tjiada, Cnpt. R. Baxter, left New York for this port
on Thursday last at 3 P. M., and may be expected
here on Sunday next, 10th inat. She will leave
-again for New York oa Wednesday, September
.13111.
The steamship Quaker City, Capt. West, is ex
pected to st'rt from New York for this city on tins
day (Saturday), and may be looked for hero on
Tuesday, 12th bist. She will leavo again on Satur
day, 1 "".Hl i 111' !..
Tho steamer Annie, which cleared from New
York for this place on the 29 tb of August, is past
'-due ; and as she is a blockade-runner, and a small
vc?sel, she may have put iuto some harbor on the
way.
The steamship den. Sherman was to bave left
'New York aovcral days back, and may bo cxpocted
momentarily.
The PosToivirB. ? The aecommodationsjand ar
rangements at the building used at present as a
"Poalolncc, reflect great credit upon Acting Post
master TnoTT. The separate windows, where let
ters for difforont classes are delivered, each with
its sign painted upon it, promotes quiet as well as
dispatch while tho largest crowds are in attend
ance. The portion allotted to tho women being
railed off, and a notice stating that that apart
ment is entirely for them, is of great benefit to la
dies particular)}', who thus are prevented from
being rudely pushed about, and sometimes un
feelingly addressed. Thorn aro two apertures for
mon, tbo alphabet being divided, which facilitates
greatly tho getting of their letters. There is also
an iron rail In front of each of these windows,
which allows but one to stand before them, and
prevente his being pressed, or crowded. There is
also an opening where men apply for letters for
females, distinct from where women niako their
own application. The rule of every ono ir. bis
place, is admirably carried out, and no confusion
of any kind ever exista. Tho private and key boxes
aro conveniently arranged, and everything appears
to havo been dono with an eye to the public bene
fit. The clerks are very polite and attentive to all
Wim call upon them, and seem determined to make
this postoflice an agreeable ono to visit.
It ?3 an establishment that all have business
with?men in every relation of life, must at some
time givo it a call; aud when we see an o?iccr at
its bead who bestows bis time and ability in mak
ing improvomonta and suggesting conveniences
that the people may not suffer, wo should be
grateful to him. So wo heartily thank Postmas
" tor Taon for his kindnesses.
A Couoneb's Inquest was held yesterday, at
No. 131 Coming-streot, on tho body of Eliza An
crnm (colorod). Yerdict, "Death from Diar
hcea."
