DAILY NEWS. MONDAY MORNING, AUGUST '21, 1805. LOCAL. MATTERS. To our City Subscribers.?We would be thank ful if there is any failure on the part of our ear ners to deliver tho Daily News, if our city aub acrihers would give us immediate notice. Every effort on our part will be made to secure an early delivery, arid if the carriers fail in doing their duty, wo hope to he immediately informed of it. Personal.?We unintentionally omitted to re turn our thanks to Mr. Thad. C. Jowitt, of the justly coXvbratviX job printing establishment, in King atreot, near Calhoun, for facilities afforded us in ia auing the that numbers of our paper, who, with his usual aud commendable liberality, proffered the use of hia presa, which was accepted, and enabled na to lay before our readers the "Daily News'* several days in advance of the arrival of our prcas. Thanks.?Wo tender many thauka to the Messrs. Mott, of No. 8 Broad-arrcot, for the delicious tur tle aoup sent to us at uoou Saturday. The officers of the atcamer Fannie, from Sa vannah, will please accept our thauka for late pa pera. |? We tender our thanks to Sir. DABBY, of tho Adams' Express Co., for late idea of Columbia, VYiunaboro', Augusta, and Montgomery papera. We are also under obligations to CJuinn & Dru. for files of late country papers. WlLMINOTON AND MANCHESTER RAILROAD.?Wo would call particular attention to the advertise ment in this morning's issue of Henry M. Drane, Esq., General {Superintendent of this road. We are informed that Mr. Drane is making every ef fort to obtain a daily mail over his road, in which we sincerely hope tie will bo soon successful. "Tl?o Northeastern Railroad is now prepared to take its daily ahare of the work. Departure.?Tho steamship Granada, of the Leahy, lino, left her wharf promptly at 4 o.'cloek on ?Saturday .afternoon last ior New York, having an excellent Hat of paaaengers and a full freight?in deed, the best aince the line haa been atarted. The success of these ships, and the extensive patronage they enjoy, apeak well for the efforts of the agent in this city. Robbery.?A gentleman from the country was, last week, inveigled into a disreputable house in Berreaford-atreet, where he was rohbed of a gold watch and ?55D. Officer Coates, the aagacioua de tective, has taken the matter in hand, and arrest ed two women, who, doubtless, committed the theft, and who w ill undergo an examination. Should they he pronounced guilty, wo predict that an ex ample will be made that will terrify all the inhabi tants of bro*hela in our city. Accident.?An officer, while riding at very great speed up King-street, on Saturday afternoon last, ran across a spring-wagon which was coming down George-street, and was thrown from his horse much injured. He is at present in a very precari ous situation, and * the animal is also very-much lrurt. ......... The Steamer Bockland_Wo enjoyed, yester day afternoon, one of the moat delightful excur aiona ever participated in, on board this boat. The company was aelect and full of joyousneas, the hosts were pleasant and generous, and the Captain was anxious and attentive. Mesara. Vannoy and Waltek paid their whole attention to tboir friend?, regardless of themselves, while Capt. Buford gratified every wish of tho passengers, without regard to his own comforts. Wo tender our best wishes for the success of the Rockland and all connected with her. Wo had almost forgotten the Steward, who handed us sandwiches that would have delighted Louis Napoleon with hia imprisonment at Ham. The scHOONEa General Scott, belonging to Messrs. Styles & Carter, of this city, and loaded with hay, iaa beon totally loat on a ?eef near Beaufort (N. C). She waa loaded with hay froni Portland (Me.) for Port Royal. rj Sales at Auction ok Boots, Shoes, Gaiters, Arc. Miles Drake, Auctioneer, at the corner of King and I liberty streets, offers for sale on Thursday next, one of the largcat assortment of tho above ever offered hi this market. The reputation of Mr. Drake will always insure him "a large com pany." Geo. W. Clark & Co?Our readers will refer to the advertisements of this firm, if they wish to sat isfy themselves that their laat importation is not to be aurpassed in quality and quantity. Colburn, Howej.l & Co?We woidd direct the attention of patrons to our advertising columna, dcairing them to read the card of these gentlemen. Their experience has been obtained in our State and City, and their t bitity as merchants ia so well known, as to cause a pleasurable feeling with many at seeing thorn once more entering commer cial life. With Mr. Colburn, long connected with the house of J. H. Taylor, Esq., and Mr. Howell, for many years in business with the sterling con corn of GiLLiLAND & Son, who can desire a better guarantee of faith, diligence and punctuality? The advertisement must be read with care. The Cobn Crop in Vuiginia.?The Richmond Depublic, of a recent issue, in reforence to this aubjeot, has the following: While tho area planted in corn In Eastern Vir ginia is probably not one-fourth as great as that of 1860, the quality of the present crop has never J>een exceeded. It is not believed that ever before y/as there, on the same number of stalks, so large a quantity of grain. Tliia is thO/CODcurroct testi mony of persons who have recently passed through most of our eastern and northorn counties. As tho people have nothing but their crops to which to look for support during tho current year, tho prospect of abundance is, even more than in ordi nary tunes, a subject of congratulation. In tho country along the Upper James, about Lynchburg, and in the southwestern part of the: State generally, a splendid corn-growing roglou, it may bo remarked, we fear thore has beon al ready too much rain, while, from present .Indica tions, tho prospect is that thoro Is to be much more. An excess of rain produces an immense crop of Btalk, but little corn. The raws that have rallen during the past two woeks prevailed in the oountry Jnst mentioned, have beon very heavy, and have done incalculable damage to the crops and in various other ways. To CrvrL OmoEBa?An important point, says the Macon Telegraph, in tho last proclamation of President Johnson, is that relating to tho civil officers of the State. By roferring to tho docu ment it will be soon that ho "declares that all civil officers who have taken and subecribod tho oath prescribed in the proclamation aforesaid, if not embraced within any of th? exceptions, or who may have received apecls.1 rmuosty If embraced, afcaU proceed i h ore after in tho discharge of the du ties of thou* several offices according to the laws . in existence prior to the 1st of January, 1861," co far as the same are not incons?itent with our proa? ent condition. _ . .Vi'sH .- ... - . . .
