? How to Mnko Money at Farming.
Tho question of lubor is beginning to assuuio*
a proportion of considerable importance. Hith
erto tbq fanner has offered tbc laborer onc
tbird of. tbc produce of tho soil as hire, ami
many find themselves making nothing nt it,
while on tho other hand, the irccdiuan is com
plaining that "ho can't live at tbc third." Nor
can-be live on the third of the produce of a
poojHyj managed aud bad conditioned farm.
The only holp for it in our own opinion is:
1st. Not to plant one foot of land that is un
manurcd.
2d. To hire only as many laborers, and to
keep only as many horses as arc absolutely ne
cessary.
. 3d. To pay tho laborers, not in the produce
of tbc farm but in money.
4th. To biro.labor by tbc month.
. 5th. To feed stock on clover, oats, turnips,
?o., aud about 20 bushels of chopped corn, per
annum.
Gth. To make use of the implements of the
prcrcnt age, aud exercise a wise judgment in
tho selection and rotation of crops.
7th. To rent all surplus lands at a fair rate,
to industrious whites or frecdmen, requiring
them to/uruish their, own,mules, ploughs, &o..
, 8tti. T? use of ' white labor, as far
as" possible.
Oth. To practice the strictest economy, espe
cially in the use of liquor, tobacco, &c.
10th. To farm in person, not by proxy.
Mr. Editor, if any of your readers will adopt
the above method of farming, T will guarantee
to them :?
1st. Surplus money at the end of the year.
2d. Satisfaction with the gifts of Providence.
3d. Health, pleasure and profit.?T., Farm

time 'Around Apple Trees.
We have known farmers to make it a vegu.
lar practice, for a succession of years to throw
caustic liino around their apple trees in the
spring and summer. Wo once noticed that a
tree BtaViding in the immediate vicinity of our
dwelling had, all at once, put forth with re
' newed energy, aud we were at a loss for some
time to define the cause. On examination, we
found that a quantity of lime, which had acci
dentally been spilled, aud .rendered worthless
by bocotning mixed with the refuse on the
stable floor, had boon thrown at the foot and
around the tree, aud to this, us the principal
cause, we immediately accredited the rcvivis
feence aud renewed fructification of the.tree.
Taking the hint from the accident, we pur
chased twelve casks of lime and applied half a
bushel to each of the trees in our orchard, and
found that it produced immediately beneficial
effects. Not the health of the trees only, but
tho quality of the fruit also, was .greatly im
proved. This application will be especially
bwucDvJui tt> oujio wncrc there is a redundancy
of vegetable matter. We would advise our
fanners, in some places, especially in now forest
lands, to make the experiment, and see ii it is
not deserving of tho high recommendation it
secures.?Exchange.
Wheat for Seeding.
A correspondent of the Canada Fanner, in
"discussing the subject of wheat growing, makes
several points which may prove valuable to
some of our readers. It is assumed that the
best soil for wheat is that iu which clay pre
dominates, hut to ensure a crop the land juu*t
be naturally or artificially drained. Arable
land requires for a full development of its re
sources a crop of fall wheat in the system of
rotation. The selecting and preparation of
seed wheat is of great importance, yet rarely
recoives any attention. Seed wheat should be
tested by immersion iu water, as the imperfect
grain will float on tbc surface, and is thus saved
from that suitable for sowing. These floating
grains are those infested with fungi or para
sites, and though light enough to float, have
still sufficient vitality to germinate and produce
the pests which diminish the quantity and vi
tiate the quality of the wheat crop. After the
floating grains have been removed turn tbc
water off and give the seed a good coating of
lime, which will render innoxious my smut
which may adborr to tho wheat. These pre
cautions takon, it is assumed that a crop of
clean whoat may be safely relied upon. The
suggestion is worthy of a trial.?Rural New

Farm Work.
Cotton-picking is now in full blast, and tbc
busiest hours of the farmer are at band. He
very careful to keep the different qualities of
cotton separate, (linns soon as possible, bale
up aud send to market. It is poor policy to
bold back for a higher price, for while the
chances are against you. your capital is also
lying idlo, nml you arc losing the interest
Upon it.
Prepare your land for an early sowing of
jiarlcy ani} use manures.
Cjoypr Lucorn, Hungarian Crass, &c., may
all be pi,fc in. He especially careful in pre
paring %? tii-^je >;rops, to plough and pulverize
your Jandtj tjpir^ighly, ;ipd also manure well.
In all ppafo (fiys hi? busy raking up your

You can also in such days repair your wagon.3
aud tool , make your bins for corn rat. proof,
&c. -Othor work will prosmt itself to the in
dustrious.?Farm and Garden.
An English fanner recently remarked tljaj
he fed his laud before it was hungry, rcstod, i/,
before it was weary, and weeded bpfor,e it was
foul. Seldom, if over, was so much agricultu
ral wisdom condensed into a single sentence,
