' Lifo.
The mere lapse of years is not life. To cat
and drink, and sleep; to be exposed to dark
ness and the light; to pace round in the mill
of habit, and turn the wheel of wealth, to
make reason our book-keeper; and turn thought
into^m implement of trade?this is not lifo.
In all this, but a poor fraction of tho conscious
ness-of humanity is awakened; and tho scant i
ties still slumber which make it worth while to
be. Knowledge, truth, love, boauty, good
ness, faith alone can give vitality to tho me
chanism of existence, the laugh of mirth which
vibrates through the heart, the tears that
freshen tho dry waters within, the music that
brings childhood back, tho doubt which makes
us meditate, the death which startles us with
mystery, the hardship which forces us to strug
gle, the anxiety that ends in trust arc the true
nourishments of our natural being.
AGRICULTURAL, &C.
Production of Sexes at Will.
For many years, eminent naturalists have
been satisfied of the near discovery of a practi
cal way to produce the sexes at will. M. Thury
bad the good luck to bo tho first one in putting
the law in practi^o, as tho following certificate
shows, translated nearly in its fm"Extent:
UI, tho undersigned, Ocorge Corhaz, tho
overseer of the estato o;f my late father, M. A.
Cornaz, President of the "Sociotie d* Agricul
ture, do la Suiftc rdinandc, Montct, Canton de
Vaud " do hereby certify, that having recoived
from M, Thury, a Profossor at tho " Academic
do Geneve," on the 18th day of February,
3861, somo confidential directions, for the pur
pose, of verifying, by experiments, the law
regulating tho production of soxes amongst the
animals. I used with my herd of cows the
directions given by M. Thury, and I obtained
immediately^ without any variation, all the. ex
pected results and succisics. In the first place,
on twenty-two successive occasions, I desired
to hhvo heifers. My cows werd of Schwitg
breed, and my bull a puro Durham, I suc
ceeded in all these case?: Having bought a
pure Durham ?;ow, it was very important for
mo to have ? nevr bull,'top?percede 'he one I
bad bought a% great expense, and without loav
Sa l &Hqw0t]| accordingly,; tho .prescriptions ,of
Ph)f.'Thury, and tho Buooess^h'aai proved onco
more (he truth of the law. I have obtained
from my Durham bull, six more.bulls (SohwitB
Durhnm cross,) for field work; and having
chosen cows' of the same color and hieght, X
obtained perfect luotphos ?f b^?p.'; . 3jy herd
amounted to 40 oows of every oge.
'?In short, I have mjtdo in all, 29 . experi
ments after the new method, and in every one,
I succeeded in the production of what I was
looking for, male or fomalo.. ";I had not one
tingle failure. All the experiments have been
made by myself, without any other person's in
tervention. Consequently, I do declare that I
?consider as real and certainly perfect, the me
thod of Professor Thury," &c., &c.
"Done at Montet, February tho 13th, 1863.
[Signed] G. CORNA55."
On the 17th of August, 1863, M. Thury
submitted a memorial to the "Academic de
Sciences de Paris," and the French Emperor
ordered tho renewing of the experiments, in
several largo "formes modcles." These curious
trials have been made also, with equal success,
in the case of other animals, as horses, sheep,
goats, &c. It is also known, that with hen's
eggs, the first laid give female and the last laid
eggs give mole products. The law is general,
%till the end of the laying season, whon tho
number of female production oxcoed the male,
undor circumstances not yet sufficiently ascer
tained to be reported. ?
It is on account of this hew practical law,
that the people can explain why the stock
raiser must give young bulls to his cows. Tho
bull, -when young is prompt, and meets the
female at the begining of ' the "heat;" instead
ofn bull old or exhausted, or lazy, by long
service, which meets the cow only at the end
of the heat. The first gives heifers?tho
second produces generally males.
The law for the stock-raisdrs and farmers is
as follows : If you wish to produce females,
give the male at the first signs of "heat;" if
you wish male, givo him at the' end 'of tho
heat.?Southern Cultivator.
Hints About Housekeeping.
We will give to intellect, to religion, and to.
all virtures, the'honor that belongs to them.
A nd still it may bo boldly affirmed that econo
my, taste, skill and neatness in the kitchen,
have a great deal to do in making* lifo happy
and prosperous.
Nor is. it, indispqnsnbly necessary that a
house should be filled with luxuries. The
qualifications for all good housekeeping can be
displayed as well on a small scale as on a large
one.
Skillful cooking is as readily discovered in a
nicely baked potato or a rcspcctablo johnny
cake, as in a nut brown sirloiu or a brace of
canvass backs.
Tho charm of good housekeeping is the or
der of economy and taste displayed in attention
to little" things,' and these little things have a
wonderful influence.
A dirty kitchen hod bad cooking have driven
many a ono from homo to seek for ooiufbrt and
happiness somewhere else.
Domestic economy is a science?a theory of
life which all .sensible women ought to study
and practice None of our excellent girls are
fit to'be married .until they are thoroughly
educated in tho doep and profound, mysteries
of the kitchen.
Sec to it, all yc who are mothers that your
daughters are all accomplished by an experi
mental knowledge of good housekeeping.
Cuttinq Grain a Century Aoo.-hA.
correspondent of the Gcrmantown (Pcnn.)
Telegraph gives 1756 as the date at which the
common grain cradlo was introduced, and de
scribes tho modo of harvesting In use at .that
time as follows:
Thoy took tho common grass scythe and
bored a hole in tho snath near the lower nib,
which wns bent over on the heel of the scythe
and fastened, the rod being about twelve inches
off from the snath; n string was tied across
from the iron rod to the snath in several places
for the purpose of proventing tho grain from
falling through. With this rough tool tho
farmer cut his grain by always keeping the
grain on his left hand, instead of the right as
we now do, so as to support the snath. Fol
lowing bun was a fellow with a roaping hook,
to put iuto sheaves, and then followed
the binder. For every two mowers and
two gatherers there was ono binder, who could
keep up, excopt in honvy grain. The usual
day's work for these five men was. five acres,
if the grain stood Up. .
