With wit as quick ?ad heart as Iras
As sver flash'd,

The second is a fairer Queen
Of hearts and arts than ?v?r was seen]
The fairies of tbs moonlit green
Are naught to Rose,

THU TUmPURANCB mOVUraUT AND
'tVUtt OHVilCU.
Tbo plain question is : Ought religi?
ous people to tako part in this move?
ment, or is it enough that they act
with their denominations? We au?
ewer, take vigorously bold and push the
enterprise to a successful issue. If the
members of thechuroh do not do it, who
will ? Is not the virtue aud integrity of
the world in the ohuroh ? Is it to be
expected that irreligious people will bo
i interested iu reforms, in whioh religious
pooplo have neither interest or part ?
A conjecture of this kind is a great ab
surd i ty. If a tctnperauce movemcot
succeed, it must bo by the close uuited
effort of the religious world.
But, it is answered, that the church
is doing this now. We grunt that she
is operating in a partial way upon her
OWn membership, but thc outside world
is not embraced iu her op?rations, aud
her effort is but lee.>le upon her own
children. What tho times cull for, is
specific and powerful effort against this
gigantic evil. .Separated and divided
as we uro by d?nommai ional differences,
it is seldom thc ease, that we are nu?
merically strong enough iu any given
community, lor Methodists, Baptists, or
Presbyterians, Jews or (Julholies alone,
to accomplish much. Hero is the ox
p?riment before us, a shameiu.1 failure ;
For yours aud yeurs, together wo have
boen trying the cxperiuicut, and year
by yeur hus been witnessed a fuilure.
Who cun shut his cyos to tho fact, that
while all the several denominations
declare against intemperance, this fear?
ful evil is on the increase outside and
inside of tho ohuroh. Is this as it
should be ? Is thc religious world wilN
ing to see this Goliah of Gath taunt
the armies of the living God and defy
tho4religion of the Bible ? Is there no
inspiration, such as moved a David, tc
excite us to "como up to the help of thc
Lord, to thc help of the Lord against
the mighty."
What is most needed, is a proper pub
lie senti men t, in the Bist place, and a rcli
gious inspiration in the sccoud place
Thc world has made up its mind to end un

Drunkards ure being manufactured bj

any better without an effort on tho par
o? tho religious world ? But it is ob
jectcd that this is mere theorising, thu
it is impractical. It is certainly s>
with no attempt, to accomplish it ; bu
suppose thal five or six men gathcrct
from the different communions of an;
town or neighborhood, shall band to
