LAMENTED ?KATH.
Tho mortal reina i na of Mr. NICHOLAS
S. PUNCH -nu intelligent, pious and
useful citizoD of Sumter Coauty-were
committed to their last resting place, at
Bethel Church, on Monday last, attend?
ed hy an unusually large assemblage of I
the people of that section, and ? number
of persons from Sumter Town.
Bothel Church, of which he was %
leading member, has truly sustained a
heavy loss. Tho scone attending his
obsequies was one of touohing interest.
The funeral cortege, beside a Masonic
procession, and many relatives and
friends, embraced the Bible elass of j
which thc deceased had been the dearly
beloved teacher-some twelve or fifteen
young ladies, robed in white, with
badges of mourning, and eaoh bearing a
flower wreath, with whioh to deck his
bier. The sobs and frequent outbursts
of grief in this fair throng attested the
depth of their affection for their depart?
ed teaobor, whilst the tears whioh ran
down many cheeks gave ovidenee of the
extent to whioh he was beloved by his
friends and neighbors.
Rev. J. W. MURRAX spoke with
much feeling and earnestness, and at
times with a sacred fire and eloquence
that moved the hearts of his hearers.
Tho burial eorvice was read by Rev.
S. J. HILL, when the body was interred
with Masonic honors, W.\ M.\ E. C.
GREEN, of Claremont Lodge, officiating.
Our deepest sympathises are with the
afflicted relatives._
TO OUR PATRONS,
Wo earnestly request those indobted
to' the Watchman to mako payment.
Wc ask that tho small amounts due us
bc paid so soon as a portion of the orop
is sold. There are many on our books
whoso names must bo (reluctantly)
stricken off, unless they pay up arrears.
Pleuse friends remember these little
matters, and come up promptly.
The prcssuro upon our columns
forces us to defer tho publication of a
Humber of advertisements, obituaries,
and other matters, uutil next wonk.
Sta?* The Clerk of thc Court wishes
to make it known that suit will be
brought against parties who fail to pay
up instalments now due on money bonds
in his possession for collection.
Mr. P. A. FOLSOM is again offering

embracing a handsome and comprehen?

FOR THE LADIES.
We havo much pleasure in direoting
the attention of our fair readers to the
advertisement of Miss. E. D. BRITTON,
to be found on another column. She
has a beautiful stock-an elegant vari?
ety-an accomplished Milliner aud
Dress Maker, and is thus prepared to
serve her customers in all tho depart?
ments of her business.
BOOT AND 8HOB STORE?
A look inside the establishment of
Mr. JAMES CALDWELL, will convinco
atty ono that Sumter has a Boot and
Shoe Store.
We acknowledge both gratification
and surprise, upon entering this con
corn a few days since. Iiis stock is
new, complete, and of the very latest
styles. Mr. C. is a reliable business
man, and will do preoisely what he
says. Call and see if it will not pay
you for reading his advertisement.

We intend, in our noxt issue, to give
a moro extended notice of this splendid
exhibition of tho wonder and beauty of

We were pleased to iee Capt. W. H.

to learn from bim that the prospect wes
favorable to an in orease of pupils for
the coming session, which bogins on
the let of Ootober. Young men are
prepared for college or for commercial
life, end the proficiency made by his
cadets the last session was highly
satisfactory. Some specimens of]
penmanship we saw some time sinoe
indicated a sucoess in that department
which is worthy of speoial notice.
Capt. COIT is thorough in all his
departments of instruction, a pleasing

Tho little mongoose when bitten, by a deadly

the antidote to which reason bids us resort when
our health is imnorillod either by the malaria
which produces opidemio disorders, or by any
