" TOM IA.
The Protesta ot Church mao priotatho
subjoined facti and reflections in rofer
- MM to the religious training and life
of Queen Victoria :
To the teachings of a good ?other,
victoria owes all ber greatness and all
* oar goodness ; and it baa often been
recorded bow the last moments of the
Doe hes? of Kent were cheered by the
success Of ber uoral and religious
training of Viotoria, reooguited and
revered throughout the domains of Brit?
ain, and wherever the English name is
known or ita language spoken.
At eighteen Victoria was Queen, aod
swayed a scepter over a domain "on
which the sun never ?et?," over a peo?
ple "whose drum-beat enoiroles the
?dobo." There is something deeply re*
igtons io the manner io which she re
oeivcd the news of the death of William
-the Pourth. The Archbishop of Can?
terbury sought au interview, in the
night, with the Princess, to inform her
of her inheritance of the crown. Says
the account from wbiob we quote : "She
hastily attired hersolf, and met the veo
?rable prolate in the ante room. He in.
formed her of the demise of the Crown,
and did homage lo her as the sovereign
of the nation. She was deeply agitatod.
The first words she uttered were these :
MI qsk your prayers in my behalf."
They knelt down together, and the
?rouog sovereign inaugurated her reign
ike a young king of Israel by asking
from on high "an understanding heart
to judge so groat a people, who could
not be numbered, nor counted, for the
multitude." Many will remember the
reply when the African prince sent to
her an embassage, with costly presents,
and asked her iu return the secret ot
England's greatness, how truly Chris?
tian was the response, when, handing
the ambassador a beautifully bound oopy
of the Bible, she said : "Tell the Prince
that this is the secret ol England's
greatness."
Her Christian spirit has ever been
untainted with exclusiveness or bigotry.
Though the temporal head of the
Church, and bound to it in almost bands
of iron, by the language of her regal
oath her mind has ever boon free from
narrowness in religious views. She bas
always been emphatically a Low Churoh
woman. Such bas always been her con
duot in tho management of her family.
The monthly nurse of hor household,
and no one will doubt that she was fre?
quently needed, was a member of the
Baptist Churoh. A Wesleyan (think of
that ye Highohurchmen !) was the wot
nurse of her last born obild ; nor has
any proof been yet adduced that the
ohild was iu any way tainted with infi?
delity, or laoking in Christian character.
The tutor or instructor, to one at least
of her sons, was a Nonconformist. All
the heads of the departments about the
Queen were pious people. " Every
ohild that was born in the royal family
was born amid many prayers. The
Eious members of thc household assem
led themselves together, and continued
praying for the Queen until the ohild
was born, when they gave God thanks "
It is tho knowledge of such facts in
the life of Viotoria that has mado her
name respected and revered ; not be?
cause she was a queen but because she
was a liberal miuded Christian ; and a
virtuous and thoroughly good woman ;
nor when the above truths are known,
will any one wonder at bor being op?
posed to the exclusivo and narrow
minded views of the Higbohuroh party,
and decidedly averse to the conversion
of the Churoh of England into a mili?
tary establishment.
THE TRAINING *OF YOUTH.
Youth, trained up in good principles
and acting in accordance with them, is
an element of strength, wherever it is
fouud-whether in quiet oountry, or
the secluded village, or tho bustling
city. There is not an operative in our
faetones, however young, whose good
oouduet has not au influence, however
little it may be, upon others; there is
not an errand boy in our warehouses'
whoso integrity does not rendor a service
to tho establishment in which he is en?
gaged, and couduoe, in however trifling
a degree, to promote the well being of
society; thero is not a youth that deals
out the smallest wares behind thc coun?
ter whoso attention and propriety of
demeanor do not contribute to satisfac?
tion and order; there is not nn appren?
tice to the humblest trade, who may
not, according to his station, promote,
in some measure, the permancut pros?
perity of a people. And then trace the
well, trained, well-conducted boy or girl
to manhood or womanhood, and view
such a ono as thc father or mother of a
family-as the manager of some com.
merdai establishment-as tho mill
owner, perhaps-as placed in any
position of authority-you will admit
at once that there is before you an
element of national strength ; and you
will percicve'how it is only from a
combination of good influences, emana
ting from individual centres, that the
foundations of a poople's soourity are
octnented and consolidated.- School
