Hydo'n Figures as a Basis?Re port Says That Hyde, With Holuics Prompting Him, Made Kstinmto Lower Than Facts Warrunted. Washington, duly 2G.?AesisL ant Secretary Hays today nmdo the following report to Secretary -u .? H3UII uu iuo acreage or cotton in the Southern Statos in 1905, as compared with that planted in 1904: "The crop estimating hoard of the department of agriculture has considered the report issued by the bureau of statistics on June 2, relative to the acreage planted in cotton in tho southern States in 1905, as compared with that planted in i904,and has concluded: "First. That a new estimute should he made on acreage planted and that the figures in Mr Hyde's hands when making his estimate _i 1 1 1 ? - Miuuiu uu uBcu as toe oasis. "Second. That Mr Hyde with Mr Holmes at his elbow, prompt, ing him, made the e*tiuiate lower than the facts at his hind from tho reports from the seven clasies of reporters employed by the bureau warranted. "Third. The board finds, upon careful consideration of the reports of all classes of correspondents and agents, that the acreage planted in cotton this year, including the entire season, should have been estimated at 65.1 por cent, of that planted last year, equivalent to a reduction in planted acreage as compared with last year of 14 9 por eeut (Instead of 11.4) or 4 831,000 acros, tho estimate of the total acreage planted tins year being 26,999,000 aeres. " The estimated percentage of the decresc in each of the cotton growing growing States is as followa: Virginia, 13; North Carolina, 16; South Carolina, 14; Georgia, i4; Florida, 18; Alabama, 11; Mississippi, 16; Louisiana, 17; Texas; 16; Arkansas, 19; Tennessee, I3 , Missouri, 15; Oklahoma, 15; Indian Territory, 11. Three million barrels of curdi oil have been destroyed, twelv< lives lost and property wipe away to the value of $l,500,00t), Of the twelve lives lost al were negroc'6. Only six of the bodies have been recovered, all of them being chared beyond re cognition. Another Oil Fire. Heaumont, Texas", July 25.? The loss suffered by the Texa company at Humble oil field bj the burning of approximately 2, 500,000 barrels of oil was furthei augmented this afternoon at Sou Lake where lightning struck 1 tank containing 130,OOo barrel' belonging to the same compnn\ and another tank containing loo, 000 barrels, all of which will be ; total loss. The fire is still burn ing but danger of spreading i: obviated by the isolation of tin two tanks struck. Tho Indications are that the] i creditors of tho oil company may probably receive trdin 38 to 50 / ?r t cent. on their claims. The stockholders will cct nothing and the creditors will bo fortunate should the above conjecture bo correct.
