I* A tornado which struck Texas in q the upper edge o f Montague j county coming from the north- i cast, an 1 swinging far to the ( southeast, litis afternoon, cost, it c is believed, over 40 lives, injured a large number of people, and did untold damage to growing crops \ and cattle. t Fortunately the tornado missed , I tho small towns in the section , through which it swept, but it t, seemed to take a fiendish dolight ^ zigzagging in such a way as to ? take in the homes of many farm- , ers and stockraisers in the see- c tion ( At Jacksboro tin- force of the ^ wind was terrific. The Baptist r church and 20 other buildings j were blown off their foundations 1 and a number of buildings totnllv destroyed. t Mrs. Travis Calhoun was seri- j ously injured and is not expected to live. Travis Calhoun, Mrs. Thomas Ilortonand Henry Yes- i scr and family were also injur- i : *i. i At Montague no lives were lost . in the town, but in the county there is great loss ( f lives report- T 1 ed. ( Owing to the fact that wires arc j down in all directions it isdifBcnlt ' to get particulars. j ' Ten persons are known tobe 1 dead in tint neighborhood and t unconfirmed reports arc to the | cll'oct that the list of dead will go ) asjhigh as 40. Most of those | killed lived on Salt creek along , 3 which the tornado swept with ter- 1 3 rific fury. 1 At Nacona the tornado passed 1 a few miles to the south and the 1 . latest reports givcithe dead at 14 ( , and the injured at 41. j Many farm houses were swept entirely away. The Long Branch , school house was destroyed, and ^ thcBaptist and Methodist churches at Belcher were practically des? troyed. ^ A reliable man at Nacona who has been over the scene says that reports rrere being received of the j dead when he left there. He places the loss of life at Go. Owing to the widely separated homes and the fact that in many 1 instances whole families were j wiped out, details and names are hard to get. The country through which the 1 the tornado passed is one of tho richest farming sections of Texas, 1 lying along the northern border of ) the State. s NO FALSE CLAIMS. 1 Tho proprietors of Foley's - Honey and Tar do not advertise this as a "sure cure for consumption." The court sustains the lower court in granting the non-suit, and does not go further into the case. Mr. Mackorcll is evidently having a lot of fun with his claim for nine pounds of candy, and he may continue to try the case if it has not outlived his limitation. John e. welsh, ? ? p-5rr.
