Cotton Lacks Cultivation.
Weekly Crop Report Indicates
Many abandoned Fields Varying
Conditions in
Different Localities
Washington, May 31 ?The
week Is nop report of the Weather
Bureau says:
"Throughout nearly the whole
of the cotton belt cotton is much
in need of cultivation, and reports
of abandoned fields are received
from Carolina", Georgia
Alabama, and Louisiana. Good
stand< arc generally repotted, but
much planting remains to he
done in northern Texas, and
planting is unfiihsed in Arkansas
In southern Texas and in portions
of the central and eastern districts
tho situation is improved,
and crop is doing well in localities.
Squares are nenv forming
in tho southern portion of the
central and eastern di-triets.
Boll weevils are increasing in Texas."
Cotton is Not in verv Promising
Shape.
Columbia, May 30. The
following report of crop conditions
for the past week tors been
issued bv section Director Bauer.
"While a few reports indicate
that cotton is doing well on uplands
more especially on red and
clay lands that ha' e been cultivated,
the majority of the reports
indicate the crop to be in an unpromising
condition with the
plants small and red or yellow and
tne growth checked by the cool
nights. Many lield are grassy
and the probability is that some
will he uhandnond in all purls of
the State owing to their condition
ard the impracticability of
cleaning them. l*lants continue
on sand land. Lice have appeared
in u number of counties, chopping
made fair progress hut lni->
not been finished in the western
counties. Sea island cotton L in
a poor condition."
? It is reported that petitions
will be circulated asking for the
holding of an election on the question
of voting the dispensary out
of Charleston county. 1,300 signatures
will he necessary. The
dispensary profits in Chaiic-t<m
arc *50,0oo a year.
