We defy him, or the ustutost lawyer in the Putted State*, to point out wherein his personal character lias been assailed in a single paragraph, sentence, or word, in either of the two articles. Our frit ltd is too old in nublic life not to know that the official conduct of every person in a Republican or free Government, from tin; highest to the lowest, is open to Uie scrutiny of the humblest freeman, from the smallest taxpayer down to the individual who has on ly 4^s life to protect. When an argument cannot be maintained w ith" out dealing in personalties, it ceases to have merit, and is unworthy a place in a public journal. Sale of Valuable Property. Mr. (A F. Ruck, Special Referee, sold at auction, on last Tuesday, that valu able property known an the Greenwood Mills. The Mills and Real Estate was bought by Mr. Win. L. lhuk for ?18,000. We are pleased to learn that Mr. Iiuck will continue the milling business, as heretofore carried on by the late firm of Messrs. Wright & I luck, j ' Death from Over-heat. On last Wednesday, a colored woman, wife of Pinckncy (been, worked in the field until near 12 o'clock, M., when, feeling exhausted, she went to the house, and lying down on the bed, asked one of the children to hand her h drink of water, but before it could be brought fresh from the spring, she was ?o far exhausted that she could not drink it., and in a few moments died. We are having excessively warm weather, and people should bo careful net to get so overheated as to prostrate their systems. ? in wwi !? *v? mmmmmi i.?^wrruni On! M., on the day of the regular annual meeting, was oi no legal binding force, as the meeting was unauthorized by law. Hut knowing that the question left in this shape would lead to interminable dispute, be1 wen taxpayers and collector, as to whether wo tax should bo one half mill or five mills on the dollar; wo forwarded a copy of the proceedings of the meeting to the Hon. W. Heaty, Ksqr., Conway boro, S. 0., Dear Sir: Yoi|^oi ..iic 5th instant is before me. It is m oj)inion that it will bo neocs?ary to hold a regular meeting, called strictly according to law, in orde .* to make your 6cliool levy legal. Very respectfully yours. I). 11. The School Trustees have called a special meeting of the legal voters ot this Township, to take place on the 29th inst., to confirm the levy of five mills on the dollar, or to fix such assessment as, by majority, may bo deemed adequate to the maintenance of the free Schoobyii this district; ?it is clear, that the intention of the law is, that each School District shall levy such an assessment, not to exceed per scho j lar, that aided by the appropriation of ^ the Legislature, it will to sufficient to maintain-* efficient Schools in each Sebool District; without this sufficient assessment, the A'chool Commissioner p is required to withhold the State appropriation from the District making ^ an insufficient le.'y, or nr. levy all. b j*. "" *? It is clear that half a mill on the dollai is iusuilicient for the educational purposes of this School District; such an assessment would reflect no credit 011 us; but would be following the example of the " ('ity of Kims;" making a mythc assessment, that we might beggarly claim our share ol the State appropriation;?by the way, the Crescent shadows forth this appropri alion to perfection, it says, 4*Tho tax laid is one halt mill 011 the hundred lit.? ? r uuii;uh worm oi properly" or tive cents on * 1,000. i- -mm, i ?? iwmmw ??r^?^ A I %Ii MCCO IE.
