The Long Branch Campaign.
[From the St. Louis Republican.]
The President is taking things coolly.
He persists in viewing the mortal j
struggle between his opponents and his )
adherents from the breezy beach of
Long Branch. He seems to imagine 1
that he will be re-elected, of course, ,
aod that he need not give himself any '
trouble about it. His partisans are 1
not as serene as their chief; they are <
not certain that he will be re-elected j.
as a matter of course; they fear he will <
not be re elected at all; and the most !
sanguine of them know that he will j
not be re-elected without a hard struggle.
Yet on the eve of this bard strug- j
gle he leaves them to do the fighting <
while he hies away to the seashore to [
watch the surt and the sai's. to display i
his stud, and await the race between ^
Longfellow and Harry Bassett. The f
' 'f ? ?:t. 1
contest between me lour-iuucrBapptaiH t
to have a greater facination for him c
than his cwn contest with Greeley; he. \
therefore haves the latter business in
the hands of his friends, while he gives s
his personal attention to the former.
His friends evidently do not half like *
this conduct of their chief. They are d
willing to do the fighting, but they a
expected, at least, the encouragement ^
of his presence. It is not pleasant to [
them to know that he has turned his *
back on them?that he is at Long g
Branch when he ought to be at Wash- a
ingion. Cj
It is not encouraging to fight fbrone who ,
does not care for his troops; and this is '
the explana'ion of that dead-alive spirit
of the Grant party. There is a percepti- T
ble lack ofenthusiasm in its ranks. Its >
camp is idle and uninteresting. We hear c
no bugle blasts to excite the udministia j;
tion partisans to action. The President's c
first warrior, Senator Morton, appeared 1
in war paint and feather at Indianapolis (l
last Saturl iv night, but his war cry was s
feeble, and hi* tomahawk was rusty and *
. dull. Wlr n Vesuvius only smokes and
fumes, nobody is afraid of it: and when t,
Sen?to- Morton ceases to vomit fire and 1
salphur, it shows that th re is something {
lacking in his task. The enthusiasm
n-liifb the Indiana Senator lacks, hi* c
whole partv lacks. They nominated 1
(rrant at Philadelphia, and here the \
tritter rests. They are not going into *
convulsions in l.eha f of a candidate who .
look? at the hattle through a field-glass i
from Long Branch. j

The cup that cheers but d<tes not inibriates.
according to Dr. Aldridge, an
English physician, is just as poisonous
as the cup which both cheers and ini
briates. The Doctor is quoted in the j
Lancet as declaring that tea-tipplipg
is not a wit less dangerous to health
than dram driuking. Tea is a narc<?t- ;
ic poiaou. It ruins, the digestion. It
enfeebles the heart's actions. It shatters
the nerves. Iicaus s the introduction
of a large quantity of h<>t tva

terribly with nutrition. Tea drinking v
, (to use the awful language of Dr Aldrigej
is 4 as distinctly sexual, extrav- q
agant.and pernicious as beeidrii king *'
