From the Royal (Bermuda) Gazette. LITTLE SALLIE. Linen suggested by the death of Little 8alli?, aged Avo years, daughter of Captain C. A. Barbt, Spartanburg South Carolina: How dear to us she had become? The light, the pride, the joy of homo ; How sue had been so bright a part Of life, and twined about our heart? We bad not known till that sad hour Whcri death approached to blight that flower. We then remembered, ah too well! No words #f ours can ever tell? The thousand little child-like things, Which back to us our mein'ry brings; How blithe she played?how sweet sho sung, What music warbled from her tongue ; What bright intelligence wo caught From her blue eyes, when somo new thought From the unknown flashed on her soul, Like streaks of light from off the pole? How sho had asked of God and heaTen, Of Jesus' lore, of sins forgiven ; And of the angels' bright ubodo, And whether they all dealt with God; Anil linur llta e/>?? 1 aCHa.! -In v ? ii4v evut vi vuvi uvui nav, And of the flowers of Paradise ; And how tho body lain beneath Tho sod, comes back from death, And reappears to die no more. The trophy of redeeming power. All these, and thousands more beside, We thought on then?they still abide? The day that little Sallik died. But this bright child we might not keep ; Bho is not dead?she doth but sleep; Her soul was called to its blest home, Where happy spirits bade her come 1 And though our hearts with grief consume, It pleased the giver to resume The precious gift: submit we thus, 8he can't return agaiu to us, But we shall go to her. And there, Nor grief, nor pain, nor anxious care, Nor death shall ever come to chill The heart whioh heavenly raptures fill. And as we pass the distant portal. Which hides the mortal from th' immortal, Our little angel's soul will lly To welcome us to that fair sky, Where clouds and darkness never lower ; Where buds and blossoms the fadeless flower; Where light eternal, cloudless light, Illumes the scene?excludes the uight? A glorious day for night like this, The long repose?the changeless bliss. Till then, within that bright abode, Our precious darling rest with God ; And when we've done tho work He's given, We'll join you in the fields of Ilcuvcn. Match 18, 180o. Men arc generally deserted in adversity. When the eun sets, our very shadows refuse to follow us. Praises arc valuable only when they come from lips tbut have the courage to oondemn. Strict punctuality is, perhaps, the cheapest virtue whioh can give force to an otherwise utterly insignificant character. The light of friendship is like the light of phosphorous?seen plain when all around us is dark. An Athenian, who was lumo in one foot joining the army, was laughed ut by the soldiery on accouut of his lameness. '1 am hero to fight?not to ruu,' said ho. The town of Augusta, Georgia, was laid out in the year 1735, by tho trustees, un A * * wb ivjm courier, ana became a garrison for tho British as early as 1736. Charles Lamb, when a little boy, waiting with his sister in a church yard and reading the epitaphs, said to her : "Wherearc all tho naughty people buried ?" A woll-known discounter having observod that there was no knowing one's lricnd till they were tried, was asked if most of his friends had not been tried already ! Affection, like spring flowers, breaks through the most frozen ground at last; and the heart which seeks for unother heart to inakc it happy, will not seek in vain. Douglas Jerrold calls woman's arms the "serpents that wind around a man's neck, killing his best resolutions." The oldest y inhabitant says ho dont object to them kind of serpents. Baid a crazy woman of a penurious, stingy man, an officer of tho Church, we regret to say, " Do you sec that man ? You can blow his soal through a humming bird's quill into a musquotoc's eye, aud the musqueto would'nt wink!" a young lady who was rebuked by her mother for kissing her intended, justitied herself by quoting the passage, " Whatsoever yo would that uicn should do unto you, do yo even so uuto thcui." A easo has been decided in Barnwell District, to the effeot, that when a freed man violates his contract, he loses the share of tho crop ho was entitled to, uudur the contract. Discussion sometimes takes place as to the lawfulness of this or that amusement. There are two good suro tests. (Ian I seek Qod's blessing in it? Would I fear to be overtaken by death when so engaged ? A character which combines the love of enjoyment with the lovo of duty, and the ability to perform it, is tho one whose unfoldings give the greatest promise of perfection. A young lady having "set her cap" for a rather largo specimen of the opposite sex, and having fuilcd to win him, was telling her sorrows to a couple of her confidents, when ono of them comforted her with these words : "Novor mind, Mollio, there's as good fish in tho sen as over yet was caught." "Mollio knows that," replied her little brother, "bat she wants a whale!" a witty clergyman, accosted by an old acquaintance by tho name of Cobb, replied : "I don't know you, sir." "My nanao in Cobb," rejoined the man, who was about half seas ovor. "Ah, air," replied the clergyman, "you have ao much of tho corn 011 you that I did not see tho 00b." 1 > T3SSI DRY GOODS STORE Teppe Ac Smyth WOULD respectfully inform the LADIES, that they are now receiving their SPRING STOCK, CONSISTING OP White Long Cloth, Brown Shirtings and Sheetings, White and Brown Linens, Merrimack, Ainoskeag, Sohwabeand American CALICOS, warranted fast colors.
