ANNUALCONFEREHEC
OF AGENTS AND S?PTS.
M C. liutual And Provident ?ssociatioa
Holds First Annual Conference in
South Carolina At Columbia.
j It was truly a representative
gathering of Negro inEurance
men and women from every sec
tion of South Carolina, who
with the general officers from
the home office of the N. C.
Mutual and Provident Associa
tion of Durham, N. G.
The meeting was called in
the beautiful new building of
the company, at the N. E. cor
Ver of Washington St, and Park
Avenue, Columbia. G?n?ral
Manager C. C. spaulding in the
chair. Prayer was offered by
Dr. A? M. Moore, which showed
that while the meeting was ol
a strictly business nature, still
the management realize thai
the first requisite was God'<
presence arid His blessing.
Mr. J. H. Garner, th9 stat?
agent for South Carolina, ex
tended a welcome in an addres
replete with cordiality and en
couragement. He gave a brie
account of the work in th
State, and during the session
was alive to the needs of th
* company, and at stated time
at the request of the officei
made Clear several points thc
had heretofore been difficult. 1
the assembled superintendent
and agents, thus making .
possible for all to return 1
their posts with a clear insigl
into the work.
I JJd>, John Merrick, the foun
. er.of the work, was next intr
duced and was enthusiastical
"received. His address w?s f
, admirable presentation of tl
great amount of splendid wo:
accomplished in the first d
eade. Mr. Merrick is a fii
type of the truly represehtati
si?d progressive Negro, .full
energy himself, he, comraui
cates the same spirit to tho
with whom he comes in co
tact. His successful life is
concreto axaniple of what c;
. be.accomplished by due atti
tion to the work in the lar
He emphasized the importan
of every representative of t
company knowing his, wc
thoroughly and. being able
present it intelligently and [i
curately.
On Friday President Merri
very eloquently, and touchic
ly made his farewell remar!
he gave to the conference a ]
per bristling with useful hin
so that every agent can go
his field to write a much louf
debit. His paper was strictl;
business paper, on j busin
lines, Among many force
epigrams were the following
part:
*. Modern business, bet
human environments."
"Business gives, opportun
for'all to work, earn, grow, a
become somebody.
''Inasmuch as business si
plies the necessitiese of life,
is impossible to have a higl
evolved aud noble race axe
where there is science of bi
ness."
/ A few men of the type
John Merrick in various s
tions of. our Southern co
try, would soon put to an t
all race harted and an tagoni;
During the firRt day's seas
Dr. A. M. Moore, the secret!
and treasurer and One of
founders Of the company,
dressed the conference.
Moore is another object leei
of what strict attention to ot
calling, can do by way of
spiration to others, Dr, Mo
although a physician of ni*
year's successful /practice
yet a most excellent busin
man abd his address to the
sam bled agents was truly
sound, logical talk on tho work.
He spoke especially ' of t the
financial condition of the com
pany and of its standing- with
thc insurance authorities of the
Stace, He gave an account of
the growth of the company
from a small sick benefit con
cern to a truly great insurance
company, with a mutual reserve
of manv thousands, showing
Dr Moore's versatility to a
marked degree was the admira
ble manner which he shifted
from financial matters to dis
eases with special reference . to
fevers. - > .
On Thursday afternoon Mr.
Spaulding invited the entire
assembly to partake of light
refreshments in the Crescent
Cafe. This Cate occupies one
of the store rooms in our .new
building and is under the man
agement of Mrs. N. S, Shelton.
Before adjournment resolu
tions not only commendatory
of but .complimentary to the
general officers were unani
mously passed, each representar
tive expressing gratification nt
the kindness extended. . So
ended the first annual confer
ance for South Carlina.
These "outings" are not only
beneficial to the active work
ers but to the policy-holders, as
all agents will go to their re
spective fields uplifted inspired
and determined to write more
and larger insurance.
