TURSDAY T NOR"C, OGT. 23. The First Day of the Fair. Notwithstanding tWe6ad condition. of the weather, the Fair opened yesterday under ver favorable circumstances. The number of entries amounted to nine hundred and fifty-eight, and the articles on exhibition are very good. The greatest display is in the Stock de partment, the department which the country at-large is most interested in, and ths cultivation of wbich is chiefly ealculated to develop general prosperi ty. There is a considerable sprinkling of blooded stock both among horses and cattle. The display of South Caro lina raised horses is fine; the colts es pecially N. The next highest number of entries is in field crops and vegetables, -100 entries. As you enter the first floor you find cotton in bales, cotton stalks, (some six feet high raised on up land,) pumpkins of wonderful size, huge beets, (no "dead beats,") a splen did collection of second crop Irish pota toes, sugar cane grown in this county, that looks like it might have been grown in Florida, rice grown in Newberry, cabbages, and many other things too numerous to mention-all well worth seeing, showing what wonders can be accomplished on our lands by proper cltivation. Up.stairs is the display of household and fancy articles. &c., pickles, wines, lard, vinegar, soap, jel lies, preserves, cake, bread, in delight ful profusion. And then the fancy nee dle work-one could linger over this for bours, and could almost wish he were a woman that be might make such pretty things. Some of these are near ly as pretty as the dear creatures them selves. Could we say more ? It's an abrupt change; but the dis play of sheep, goats, swine and poultry is first rate. Indeed all departments are well and fully represented. Personal. Dr. J. W. Folk, of Jalapa, made thirty-eight entrie.s. Mr, C. H.
