It is now in order for Senator Beveridge to rise and remark that when he said that the flag was to stay in Cuba, he had no intimation of the fact that Mr. Rooseevit would not agree with him. Some of the Rpublican Journals are condemning the allegt d tree man ner in which Mr. Hearst is making use of money in his campaign. It ie a safe wager that he didn't get the money from corporation and insur ance companies. The Republican ofliee seeker will now proceed to explain to his audi. ences that it is absolutely necessary for them to see him safely landed in the particular place ho desires, if they want to show their approval of any of the acts of MIr Roosevelt. The work of Representative Joit Wesley Gaines on the Dcmocrati< campttign text book is of the highe: order. His masterly handling of th subject of the tariff ought to convinc many voters who (lid not have a clea idea of the subject before of the evil of a high tariff and the urgent nee of tariff reform. Charles E. Hughes has been t Washington to get some pointers fror the President on how to run his can paign for governor of New York. I is not knoon whether Mr. Roosevel advisad him to start out by attempi ing to revise the pronunciation c ordinary English words, or to try t simplify the Arabic notation. The United States Army has adopte a new bullet. Instead of the round ed point of the present bullet, it ha a long straight-tapering point and i 1-83 lighter, weighing about 15 grains. It has a greater velocity u to 2000 yards, a greater enerey u~ to 1400 yards, and a better accurac tup to 200J yards. Six men took a unique examinatioi recently at the Navy Department They were competing for appoint ments as finger experts of the U. 6 Navy. The successful candidate will aid in installing the pudd'n Hea< Wilson system of identification in th< Navy. The salary of a finger expor is $1,86~0 per year. A glance at the figures in the elee tion last fall for mayor of New Yorl City shows that Hearst's chances o being elected governor on the fusioi ticket are verry bright. Tammnany'i votes will this year be east for th, young editor, while last year it won largely to McClellan. Moreover Hearst has a host of followers all ovel the state.. Th U. 8. Supreme Court will takt up a nurmber of cases of national in terest in the coming term. Among others are that of the miners who ari charged with the assassination of Governor Steunenberg of Idaho; ol Albert Patrick of New York, who is attempting to escape the death pen. alty; and the famous Isle of Pinet case, which is to decide whether this island is foreign territory or .not. __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ According to the vcry best infor. mation obtainable, we pass this way but once, aud when we step into the valley of the shadow, all our ('arthily belongings will be left behind. Not a icow, nor a shnep, nor an acro of land, not a dollar of money, will go intd the grave with us. why thon should men race through life in a mad flight for gold, brru.hing all theo better th)ings aside, when at last it mnust be nuloaded at the tomb? Would it not be bettor to smile a lit-. tie and (10 a few good deeds as wc went along? Would it not bo a bot ter plan to put a flower inIto the band of some sad-hearted human)ff beOing . struggling along the road of life, than to clnch n a mghyde liar utl cold death forced us3 to relint a q h it?: Chairman Jim Sherman of the Re. I publican Congressional Campaign sommittee is professing to take a great interest in the cause of the un ion men in the Government Printing Office. Mr Sherman's interest comes a little late, however, for he turned a deaf ear to labor's complaints in the last session of Congress, and the American Federation of Labor pro- ei poses to defeat him for re-election if d it can possibly do so. h How to Cure a Cold, al The question of how to cure a cold u without unnecessary loss of time is one in which we are all more or less inter- e ested, for the quicker a cold is gotten w rid of the less the danger of pneumonia and other serious diseases. Mr. B. W, L. Hall. of Waverly, Va., has used C Chamberlain's Cough Remedy for vears h and says: "I firmly believe Chamber lain's Cough Remedy to be absolutely a the best preparation on the market for a colds. I have recommended it to my u friends and they all agree with me." For sale by Pickens Drug Co. t (1 Senator Tillman said to an audi ence of his neighbors down in S5uth Carolina, that he was going up north for a while and toll some of his poli tical enemies what he thought of themrn and make them pay him a good round sum for giving them the chance to listen to him. Well he went and talked to them for 100 nights at $250 a ntight .Reports say that the people were so well plersed with him that they want him to come again on the same terms. A cold is much more easily cur (I when the howels are opened. Kennedy's L,xative Honey and Tar opens the bow el and drives the cold out of the system in young or old. Sold by Pickens Drug Co. The Cuban situation has delayed for a time the Government's active prosecution of the Standard Oil Com. pany. The wheels of justice are in motion again, however, and the peo D ple are anxirusly waiting to see wheather the Standard Oil Company will be entanglod and ground up by t its machinery, or will bob up serenely t after having passed through the mill, none the worse fer wear, as it usual f ly does. Danger From Thu Plague. There's grave danger from the plague of Coughs and Colds that aro so preva 1 lent, unless you take Dr. King's New Discovery for Oonsumption, Coughs and Colds Mrs. Ger, Walls, of Forest 3 City, Me., writev: "It's a Godsend to s people living in climates where coughs and colds prevail. I find it quickly ends them. Fresh air, ex ercise, nourishing food and Scott's Emulsion will come pretty near curing~ it, if there is anything to buiId on. Mil lions of people throughout the t world are living and in good health on one lung. fJ From time immemorial the doctors prescribed cod liver oil for consumption. Of course the patient could not take it in its old form, hence it did very little good. They can take SCO TT'S EMULSION and tolerate it for a long time. There is no oil, not excepting butter, so easily digested and absorbed by the system as cod liver oil in the form of Scott's Emulsion, and that is the reason it is so helpful in consumption where its use must be continuous. @J We will send you a sample free.
