Letters Where i Dear Mr. Beebe: It never ceases to amaze me how a school can consider itself a "major university" while in so many areas ;prove itself to be exactly the opposite. As if it isn't bad enough that student athletic facilities are for all purposes non existent on this campus, to make matters worse, the few miserable basketball courts the university does boast seem to be inaccesible on weekends. After waiting in the rain for Longstreet Gym to be opened on Sunday a few friends and myself made a number of phone calls only to be given the usual runaround. Is it to much to ask that the couple of obsolete athletic facilities we have be made available to the students of Carolina. Or am I wrong in assuming that this school is for the students who to a large degree support it? It seems a shame that those of us unfortunate enought not to be on some sort of athletic grant must have to put up with this lack of interest on the part of those concerned. VINCE GOULDING. BILL GOULDING MIKE CONROY JEFF AMBERG AL KAUFMAN New committee Dear Mr. Beebe: Several weeks ago, through the initiative of the Foreign Languages Department, a Student Consultation Committee was formed. It was their goal to establish liaison with the students ,enrolled in foreign languages, and to consider from them any suggestions or ideas they might have to offer. We are now meeting regularly, and have established as our first objective to contact those students enrolled in language courses. And this letter to The Gamecock is our first effort. $1.39 BREAsED SALAD and PANCAKES FIVE SYRUP FLAVOR. .75 All you can eat SERVED MONDI SUNDAY THRU THt FRIDAY & Si I NTERNATI0O 1031 .ASSFMRI are the bt The Student Consultation I -ommittee was given two votes to )e cast in each of two faculty committee meetings: The Basic Studies Committee, which works with courses 101 - 202, and the Advanced Undergraduate Studies Committee, which represents the upper-level language courses. Before we can exercise these lour votes, however, the SCC must [irst learn what you, the language student. have to suggest. Until we can arrange a survey or other means of contact, you are invited to write to us: STUDENT CONSULTATION COMMITTEE Department of Foreign Languages Humanities Center We have already sent two representatives to each of these meetings where the attending faculty has been extremely cordial and willing to listen to our suggestions. But until we hear Irom you. the language - learning populus, we cannot suggest anything. We therefore urge you to Ldrop us a note in the campus mail. .J. PETElt EDWARDS Chairman. Pro-Tem -S11udent1 Consultation Committee Lounge Dear Mr. Beebe: It has come to our attention that the Russell House lounge has become an art gallery for a month. Along with the new name, the lounge carries several new rules, such as, no card playing, no for nication, no food or drinks, and a 10 p.m. closing time. It is very interesting that food and drinks were served in the. lounge today by the University Union Arts Committee. It is also interesting that there is a picture showing fornication hanging on the wall of the lounge. I can see no reasoning behind the 'no card playing' rule and the 10 rouimN cnicD CIIlCKEN CHi SERVED WIT POTATO PANCa BATTER .95 All_you_can eat ~Y THROUGH THURSDAN IRSDAY - 7:00 A.M. Since it is obvious that the Russell House has a space problem, I wonder why the Russell House director does not make Vice-President Brunton aware of it instead of hassling a certain minoriKy of the student body. DORIE ZUK PHIL RADER JACK SMITH Orangeburg Dear Mr. Beebe: Samuel Hammond, Relano Middleton and Henry Smith were kiiled "on the S.C. State College campus, Orangeburg, S.C., February 8, 1968, in pursuit of human dignity." JAMES TRIBBLE Cocks Iear Mr. Beebe: As an alumnus, loyal Gamecock Ian. and ZTA. I thought you might like to hear from a place that is real Gamecock territory. I'm currently employed as a remedial reading specialist for the Department of Defense in the Philippines at Clark Air Force Base. Here, the raising and training of gamecocks is probably the number one sport. Cock fighting is prominent in every town and village on the island. The cocks take months to trains and are truly loved by the owners despite the great chance of death. Good luck to our fighting Gamecocks whom I'm sure will regain their strength and emerge victorious. It is an old Filipino belief that many times a cock who is losing a battle will regain strength and move on to a splendid victory it the crowd of spectators had the true spirit of the game in his heart.
