LOCALS Never before in the history of the institution has a session opened with brighter prospects. The excellent ad vantages offered at the University; the winning of the State championship in baseball last season, and the reinstate ment of football, have all done their share in persuading many young Car olinians to become wearers of the Garnet and Black. Our new "fellows" give promise of a strong will and determination to do all that within them lies for the wel fare of Carolina, and with this united spirit 1909 bids fair to be a banner year. During the first week the several classes, societies, clubs, and publica tions have been busy starting the work of a new session. The Senior Class met in the chapel on the afternoon of October ist and elected from among their faithful "thirty" the following officers for '09: President-B. J. White, York. Vice-President-J. I. Humphrey, Florence. Secretary-L. W. Smith, Spartan burg. Treasurer-J. 0. Allen, Greenville. Historian-Miss A. L. Bowen, Richland. Honor System-W. H. James, Chester. The Junior Class met on the follow ing afternoon and elected the follow ing for their officers: President--A. D. Oliphant, Union. Vice - President - H. L. Izlar, Orangeburg. Secretary and Treasurer-F. G. Cain, Berkeley. Historian-F. S. Speigner, Rich land. Honor System-D. E. Finley, Jr., York. The Sophomores also have organ ized, and these are their officers: . Simpson, Laurens. The Freshmen have been unable to find time for such trivial matters; nor have they been able to select from a body of such capable men the ones to whom they wish to entrust for the first time the guardianship of their flock. The German Club met on Wednes (lay afternoon, and after electing and initiating several new members, elect ed for the first collegiate term the fol lowing officers: President-L. W. Smith, Spartan burg. Vice-President-R. M. Cooper, Jr., Sumter. Leader-H. W. Hughes, Edgefield. Secretary-Bernard Manning, Sum ter. Treasurer - Randolph Murdaugh, Hampton. The Athletic Association met Mon (lay morning, September 28th, and after receiving about a hundred new members, elected officers as follows : President-I. F. Belser, Richland. Vice-President-Bernard Manning, Sumter. Secretary and Treasurer-J. E. Crouch, Saluda. Many new clubs, such as tennis and golf, will be organized this week, but the three most important clubs, "The Scribes," "The Glee Club," and "The Dramatic," have to rely upon the sup port of the student-body, hence their organization is not complete. As we are so fortunate as to have once more among' us Messrs. Mc Gowan Holmes,*and "Cope" Massey, of Taxahaw, the two stars of '07's Dramatic Club, we would urge that they use their uttermost efforts to ward getting up a "minstrel" and fill their long standing engagements with the "Academy of Music" in Charles ton, and with "The Grand" in Atlanta. This would be of great financial aid to athletics, as well as a splendid ad vertisement for the University. Come on, boys I Help out a good cause ! * * * Among the alumni who have visited the campus during the past week are: Messrs. Eugene S. Oliver, captain of 'Varsity football team 'o4; Ashley C. Hemphill, 'o8, of Chester; W. D. Aiken, 'oS, of Aiken; E. S. Croft, 'o5, and T. G. Croft, 'o8, of Aiken; B. J. Wingard, '07, of Lexing ton ; David Hamilton, 'o7, of Chester, and H. H. Scott, '07, of Monticello. * * * Can A. C. Modre than G. B.? Answer-Next issue. * * The "Terry Boys" will be with us next week. * * * "WOOD UP I I" * * * Fresh Sligh (standing outside the "Marshal's office" Monday morning) -"What are all those boys voting on?" Senior Sheppard-"Church slips." * Because Johnny, Jr., is always strik ing attitudes, does it necessarily follow that he makes a big hit? Professor Carson-"What is it, Mr. Green? (on seeing Fresh Green tam pering with the air pump). Fresh Green-"Mr. Peter .Phillipps wants a glass of water." * * * Wanted to Know-If the residents of the campus have noticed Trippett's activity of late. * * * "The night was growing old As he trudged through snow and sleet; His nose was long and cold, And his shoes were full of feet." -Fresh Russell. * * * If any of the above knocks you, don't get haughty; be an optimist. If a fellow biffs you in the jaw and you swallow a few teeth, imagine they needed pulling anyway. Be satisfied with your lot; you'll have to be when, you're finally buried in it, you know.
