TEie 'colored women in the Blair sec tien, who were not organized so long -~aoJave been doing very good work. ~ They have limited time, most of them working ini the field, and with their coking ' and -washing and sewing to do it is'surprising how they have found any time for sewing for the -;Red Cross-but they have found it an~d with. their limited opportunities Vof bearing about the war. of learning the real inecesity of helping at home, they 'have begun to grasp the idea wonderfully well; and seeing the ne e) essity. are making an effort. Of their own accord they sold ice creami at a. recernt school closing, and made -up a purse which they sent in to Red Cross headquarters in Winns boro "To Help Some." This is truly a reproof to those who say, "Well, I Twould be willing to help; but I can't do -anything." Those darkies in a -sparsely settled community, with lim ited opportunities of hearing and see ing, with never a lecure on the sub ject, are grasping the right idea. They are called "The Gethsemane Branch," Inamed after their church, the best r.ame they knew by which to dignii fy it A vote of thanks is given to them for their contribution unsought -or after all, is not voluntary help -the very best kind ? I .COMMITTEES .APPOINTED .FOR EACH .StHOOL .DISTRICT APPORTIONMENTS MADE I Next Monday will see the beginning of the second. campaign in Fairfield County for .the; purpose of .raising funds for the Red Cross. In the first campaign last year the apportionment I for this county was four thousand dol lars..This time the apportionment is considerably higher, being seven thou sand dollars. The entire amount to be raised in the United States is one hundred million dollars. Already plans Are being laid for the campaign and there is every reason to believe that the county will go above the allottment. No'cause has ever been presented to the peopTe of [t Fairfield county that has offered them such an opportunity * to serve suffernhg humanity. It is a call that no man with' a mans heart can turn down. It is the greatest call of the ages, a call which answdred gives life back *to those on the brink of .death and makes the givef nobler .than all other aets of his life. The call for this amount is not a burden on Fai field county. Rather it is a previledge to have the 'apportunity to' thus serve ones suffering brothers who are pour ing. out their blood that we -may re main.free. 1 Below is a. list of the, committee in the various: sections of the county The -districts correspond t6 the same school- districts by! number. One of the monster meetings that will usher in the Red Cross campaign for next week will be hild in?Rfftg way next- Sunday night at eight-tliir ty in the Baptist church. 'All of the churches of . Ridgeway. have agreed to have no service on this night but to give over the time to the speakers for the Red Cross. The meeting is being held in the Baptist church as this will probably seat more people than any of the' other churches in the city. Much intrest attaches to.. the fact that one of the speakers is a French man who has had two years of service at the French front. This is Dr. A. Beziat, who is at present attached-to Camp Jackson as director of French there. -Dr. Beziat will be able to tell a story straight from the trenches and describe something of the life there and of he terrible conditions that the Red Cross is trying to better. Dr. Thomas Newlin, who was. president of Elon College in North Carolina I prior to the war and who is at present Camp Educationial' Director at Camp Jackson will be one of the sp6akers. Dr. Newlin has already spoken once in the county, having been -one of the speakers at one of the meetings held in Winnsboro. Both Dr. Newlin and Dr. Beziat are splendid speakers and will bring messages thai .will be of vital interest to the community.
