True the fugitive slave law is but lit
tle worth. If a provision of the Consti
tution cannot be carried out, it cannot
be enforced by a law. The expense of
recovering a fugitive deters most men
from attempting it; but when danger to
life is added to this, the odds are too
strong. Not one fugitive in a thousand
is returned to his owner, and yet South
ern men are found who laud the “glori
ous compromise”—the “fair and equit
able adjustment” These are the men
who are encouraging the North and
stabbing the Union to the heart The
people of the North are deceived, and
