I I / Slate to a course of action t>he had cau tiously avoided, by getting “ a snap judg ment upon the question” taken. « The people of South Carolina have ever been opposed to party strife, and consequently are ifct readily clamorous in opposition to measures not detrimen tal in themselves, but confidently trusting that their leading men will do what is right, generally renfUn quiet and conse quently undisturbed by the rage of po- sraeiirti'a litical element# as other States are, and though to Justice this “abundantly proves that until ncently there was no division among us,” yet Justice must now per ceive that the people are watchful, and that as soon as they find themselves in danger in consequence of the policy of their rulers, they readily speak out and show to the world that they are not “ in the leading strings of the politicians.” Justice begs leave to challenge the truth of the assertion that Mr. CAyiouN was opposed to separate State action. If he had had the proof that Mr. C. did favor that measure, he could have given it in fewer words than he used in speaking of “Sugar Jimmy,” and endeavoring to bring his name into contempt. Why did not Justice quote the language of our la mented statesman in which he advocated eeparatc State action, and by thus doing put an end t^that But instead of tlujj he quotes from Mr. Cai.hocb’s speech on the Force Bill, which 'ia? no analogy to the present crisis, and then quotes from another speech in whfclt the name of CarolinI is nolwnentioned, but “the South” and “the Southern States,” an#'unless Jvslice can make it appear that South Cai Jinr is “the South" hie argument falls. But I am not without positive proof that Mr. Calhoun did en tertain the views attributed to him by Gen. Hamilton. Speaking of the course the South should pursue to obtain re dress, he says: “ To do that concert of ac tion must be necessary, not to save the Union—for that would be too late—but to save ourselves. Thus, in my view, concert is the one thins; needful." And in his letter to Mr. Foote, he says: “The South cannot save herself without con cert of action.” Next in order comes “ A Member of the S. R. Association,” the tone of whose effusion at first inclined me to pass him unnoticed, but lest he should think he has “bewildered and frightened” me, I shall do him the honor to notice him briefly. He has learned that “hard words can be disposed of in one way or another,but hard arguments are the hardest kind of tilings to get over,” and he acts upon that principle in lull, or he never would have used such expressions as the fol lowing, viz.: “Webb and warp of their oUnmaking,” and “ the cry of secession, it seem s has rung in his ears until it has Iniwildered and frightened him,” and “ if One of the People tfere likely to prove half as valiant in the use of the musket as he is in random and extravagant as sertions, he would be an acquisition to the cause of Southern Rights,” and of course to the Southern Rights Associa tions, of which he is “ A Member.”— “One of the People” confesses that he has never rightly understood the charac ter of Southern Rights, if “ the use of the musket” be a distinguished or indis pensable qualification in its advocates, but it must be, as “ A Member” would not have used the expression he did. If the time ever comes when “ the use of the musket” shall bajrequisite in “ the cause of Southeni4®|(tt|k” One of the People trusts that A IKfmWt w ill be “ valiant”— not “ bewildered and frightened.” A Member has outstripped himself.— He has branded One of the People as ‘•this Plebian representative of the peo ple—the masses,” and I would respect fully ask him if he is the Patrician repre sentative of the Southern Rights Asso ciations, and if he is, whence he derived his “nobljs lj^K>d," since “all men are cre ated equal” He Speaks of the people “ being hitch ed to the Federal car, and rolling along in the sunshine of Federal favor, with no rights to vindicate and no wrongs to re dress,” as though the people of South Carolina had ever been recipients ofciYd- eral favor to any alarming extents or that they are not watchful and jealous of their rights- Ilo of course speaks ironically, thof are keenly aftve to injustice, but they are not willing to be hurried to ruin in order that Patricians may figure in the new order of things. I have already dis posed of the point respecting Mr. Cal houn's views, in ray reply to Justice. It has on it a two story dwelling house 50 feet by 34, eight upright rooms, 1 all plastered throughout, 4 passages and piazza, and a good cellar under the house, attached to said dwelling house, is a new building, well finished containing two rooms tvt'h piazza.
