The States of North and South Carolina,
and the various corporations chartered
within their limits, which have been bor
rowers of money, have uniformly and
under the most adverse circumstances
promptly met their pecuniary engage
ments. Public sentiment in those States
has always taken high ground in regard

The $300,000 will be disposed of abso
lutely and without reserve to the highest
bidders.

IN LAW AND EQUITY.

and 1st June in year, convertible into the
capital stock of the Company, at the op
tion of the holders.
They are issued under acts of the
Legislatures of North and South Caroli
na, secured by a Mortgage, or Deed of
Trust,to Edward Standford, Esq.,ot New
York, in trust for tl|||*iolders of the Bonds.
The Deed of Trust covers the entire
line of the Road, completed ai d to be com
pleted, from Wilmington, in N. C., to
Manchester, 8. C., a distance of 162 miles,
costing, when completed with a heavy T
rail and equipped, $1,600,000. The ex
traordinary adaptedness of the country
to the construction of a railway, accounts
for this low cost.
The Trustee is empowered, in case of
60 days' default in payment of principal
or interest, to take possession of the en
tire line of Road, with its equipments,
stations, income, franchise, Aec., the same
to sell at his discretion to the highest bid
der for cash, to pay arrears of principal
or interest.
The whole amount cf bonds author
ized to lie issued by vote of the stock-
holders, at a meeting called for that pur
pose in April last, and an order of the
Kail Roan, $600,000 to raise means to
pay the residue of the iron
equipments, only $300,000 of which are
now offered for sale.
The Company will owe no other debt
when the road is completed.
This road w ill prove an iiMMrtant link
in the great chain of Railnid from Bos
ton, New York and Philadelphia to New
Orleans, connecting at Wilmington with
the Raleigh and Wilmington Railway,
now in successful operation; at Manches
ter with the great South Carolina railroad,
leading from Charleston in the direction
of Montgomery, Alabama, now in the re
ceipt of near a million of dollars annual
ly from its businef#; will avoid the pres
ent disagreeable sea, voyage from Wil
mington to Charleston, shorten the travel
to New Orleans one days’ time, facilitate
the mails, and will bring the South in more
immediate and direct communication
with the North.
The position of Uiis road, its connec
tions North and South, its easy grades,
(nona over thirty feet to the mile,) free
dom from curves, and cheap construc
tion, is such as to put it beyond the com
petition of any other lind of road, for the
immense inland travel between the North
and New Orleans.
I The greater part of this road traverses
Ihe most populous and fertile portions of
South Carolina, producing cotton, corn,
&c.. in great abuudanceT Its local busi
ness alone will support it handsomely.
The census of 1850 shows that the dis
trict of country which will lie tributary to
this road, and dependent on it for trans
portation to the market, produced in 1849
seventy thousand bales of cotton, of an
average weight each of 450 lbs. jjk
The Company has one million of
available stock subscribed, most of which
has been paid in and applied to construc
tion, to which can be added at any time,

being in the course of delivery, and will

The entire line is under contract for
grading and bridging, and in a forward
state towards completion.
Six thousand two hundred tone iron
rails, T pattern, have been purchased and
are in coursq of delivery.
About $700 ,000 has already been ex
pended in construction, including pay
ment for the rail? purchased.
It is expected that about 80 miles from
Manchester East will be completed and
in operation in the Fall of this vtar, and
1 the entire line to Wilmington eWy west
year.

There is in my neighbourhood, (and
has been for several years,) a large horn
ed Red STEER, with some little white
about him, five or six years old, apparent
ly, which I claim as being the property ot
James Holloway. The said steer has a
swallow-fork in his right ear, and an un-
derbit in the lift, which is plain to be seen,
the over slope in the right ear, in addition
to the other marks, constitute the whole
of the mark, under which I claim but,
have been unable to discover the over
slojie, at a distance. I therefore give uo-

claim very soon, I will take his hide off
and make a closer search.

at that time, one third on 1st January
1853, and one-third on 1st January 1854;
the two deferred instalments to bear in
terest from 1st January 1862, when pos
