The Darlington flag (Lydia, SC) 1851-1852, May 21, 1851, Image 3
knows the jyjdue of liberty, tod he says
he came to conclusions slowly, and
was now confflfted ^^utler and Back-
well. We will use a part of a*piece
found in the Charleston Courier of May
tf, to wit.: “About the queerest piece of*
inconsistency that could be perpetrated
by men boasting'themsdves Republicans,
is calling those ‘submlssionists,’ who dif
fer from them astothe course that should
bo pursued in present difficulties.—
Calling names is a weak resort, even to a
slave, and the man who applies it to his
fellow-citizert would put his hand on his
mouth if he dared. It is the evidence of
a would-be-tyrant, of an enemy to that
freedom of opinion and speech which
should especially belong to ai^Amarican.”
We would say, let us discuss it fairly
and calmly, and act with patience; let us
speak of the Union in proper language
and more particular the Southern States
w ith love aqd forbearance. We believe
all will yet be right, and would again say
patience. In conclusion, fellow-citizens,
we were glad to see the spirit of resist
ance to Northern aggression in the bosom
of every man in the Convention and let
us act unitedly, and all is well. Now, in
the language of ex-Govemor J. P. Rich-
ardsok, “ that car* should be taken in re
moving the ills fe suffer, we fly not to
others we know hot of, and it is seldom
that they who ride the whirlwind reap
the storm.”
We are, fellow-citizens,
Your ob’t servants,
