were there. Our pen fails to do it justice.
After the recital <rf the introductory pieces,
the approach o#the “Queen” was an
nounced, and Mias P. Colclough, attend
ed by her “Maids of Honor,” passing
through the procession, ascended the
throne and was crowned “Qi'een of
Mat.”
The young ladies were remarkably hap
py in the recital of their different pieces.
We would particularly notice the Queen’s
remarks to her “ fair subjects;” we do not
t hiuk that we have ever heard a young lady
recite a piece with so much earnestness,
feeling, graas and effect. May she live
long and happily, and her fair face al
ways be as radiant with joy as on the
evening when we saw her, by the free
suffrage of her fair companions, crowned
“ Queen of May."
The coronation being ended, there was
a quick intermingling of the sexes. The
buzz of voices ahd the ringing, happy
laugh told that the fount of mirth was
opened, and all seemed willing to partake
of its waters. Gentlemen with their cho
sen ladies were promenading in the plea
sant piazza, while here and there groups
wore seen in earnest conversation,

The tableau attracted much attention du
ring the evening; the representations
were verytgood; the performers deserve
great credit for the manner in which they
acquitted themselves. We hope Uiat by
their next entertainment such arrange
ments may be made as will enable all to
witness these perfonnances who desire
to do so.
There still awaited us a splendid sight,
and a pleasant duty, viz.: the supper ta
ble, and the pleasure of vailing on the
ladies. The table did indeed present a
magnificent appearance; we forfeit noth
ing by the assertion, that it was not sur
passed by any table arranged in celebra
tion of the return of May; and we further
assert, that when surrounded by the fair
daughters of Carolina there assembled, it
surpassed any. We were informed that
nearly all of the nice things seen upon the
table wewi the work of the young ladiee*
while the beatify rf arrangement was due
entirely to them. *Thia is an important
part of a lady’s education, for, we expect
them to make good wires, as well as good
scholars. We can testify to the intrinsic
worth of the supper, having ridden forty
tnilfte, without dinner. Rest assured, Mr.
Editor, it was as good as it looked. What j

Those TCho went from Darlington were
unable to feturn during the night; they
received every attentioa from the gentle
manly burser, the Rev. Mr. Graham.—
We never can forget his kindness, and
take this opportunity of publicly thanking
him for his attentions.
On the morning following we had the
pleasure of sitting dow n to breakfast with
that bright collection of beauty, which had
charmed us so much the night before, but
must acknowledge that we could not do
justice to the delightful fare which sur
rounded us. We are very bashful, Mr.
Editor. Breakfast being ended, we start
ed on our return to this village.
We were very much pleased with that
worthy, estimable and courteous gentle
man, the Rev. Edwih Cater, Principal
of the Institute. Long may he continue
to discharge the duties of his office, j
which heretofore he has performed with
so much honor to himself and benefit to .
those placed under his charge.
I’he Institute is in a very flourishing
condition, the scholars numbering one
hundred or more. The location is well
selected; being some distance from any !
tow n or village, there is nothing to di
stract the attention of the young ladies,
or draw them from their books, while the
healthiness of the situation, together with
the fine opportunities for vigorous and
healthy exercise should recommend it to
all parents who desire not only to see their
daughters well educated and refined la
dies, but also in the possession of unim
paired Constitutions. Success to the

It is very natural that a Boston edi
tor should “like” such a speech, and
take pleasure in recording it. Bnt we
do not believe that there is “ a citizen
of Charleston ” gifted with the peculiar
kind of “ jtatriotism ” that would prompt
such a speech. If so, the sooner he
“ secedes” from that city to the more
congenial clime of Boston, the better
for both.
