The temporary einbarraBwntts of this
journal nas been the subject of much
congratulation among the ultra-Union- |
ists of the differetit States, who not on- :
ly willing to bent! to the tyranny of
unjust legislation themselves, would
even also suppress the murmurs ofhon-
est remonstrance uttered by the people.
Such examples are quite sufficient to
make us less charitable in our opinions
of mankind than we would wish to be.
'ITie time is not, however, so fardistnut
but that we may expect to see every
ungenerous ebullition of feeling suppres
sed not only through the triumphant re
vival of this journal from its present
trifling embarrasments. but also in the
superior position and influence ofthose
whose interests it has so gallantly ad
vocated and truthfully maintained. Eve
ry day gives additional testimony that
such will ultimately be the case and
nothing but the most uqgenerous and
indifferent conduct of" those, ns the. or
gan of whose sentiments it stands forth
can preclude its success. We do'mdt
anticipate this indifference for such
would argue a lukewarmness not at all
characteristic ofthe people from whom
it emanates. Their silence will be much
misconstrued if it be supposed to argue
anything indeterminate or vacillating.
We have from the best sources know
ledge of their sentiments, and are satis
fied that more is to be anticipated from
this apparent calm (which has deceived
many) than from any excess of pas
sionate remonstrance, the futility of
which they have long since dissevered.
They would, were it left to them alone,
we sincerely believe, echo the cry ofhim
whose last efforts were spent in their
cause, and whose last attitude was that
of reference to this charter of union and
liberty—“The Constitutinn as our fa
thers gave it, or seperate indepen

the great staple of the State, the climate
and quality of the soil giving it peculiar
advantages beyond any other portion
of the United States. The trade in
moss, hemp, arrow root, and the orange
and lemon, has also become of much
importance.
Tkhkible Eahtiicii’ake.—On the
28th of February, Turkey and the Is
lands of the Levant were visited by the
most destructive earthquake known for
years. The shocks continued daily
till March 7th. Whole villages were
destroyed, and it is believed that 1000
lives were lost At Rhodes the upper
part of the castle at the entrance of the
town was destroyed.
