Georgia Democratic Convention.
fete- We are indebted to a friend for the following,
dated Milledgeville, March 31 :
The Democratic Convention lias just adjourned.
They adopted the Baltimore Platform of
1848, but refused to express a preference for any
'of the candidates for the Presidency. They ap
pointed four delegates from each Congressional
I district, and eight from the State at large to the
Baltimore Convention. They also adopted the
'following Electoral ticket:
y For the Stale at large.
lion. Wilson II. Lumpkin, Hon. II. V. Johnson.
First District, Thomas M. Forin.
Second u Hick and 51. Clark.
Third u Henry *0. Lamar.
Fourth " Hugh A. Haralson.
Fifth " Joseph E. Brown.
Sixth " William M. Mitchell.
Seventh " R. W. Flournov.
F.icrhtli " Willi.-rm Seh'lov.

vCharleston Mercury.
_ It is computed that there .are -six thousand
m Vagrant children it) .the city of 3Tw Yorkt destitute
of intellectual or moral instruction. An
. institution has been recently incorporated by the
L legislature of that State, styled the Xew Vofk
I Juvenile Asylum, ihe object of the corporation
being to talce charge of such children, between
the ages of five and fourteen years, as -may be
voluntarily entrusted to it by their parents or
guardians, committed to its charge by any magistrate
of the city; to provide for their support;
and to afford them the means of moral, intellectual,
and industrial education.
A Passing Thought.?Iiothschild is forced '<
to conteut himself with the same sky as the poor!
newspaper writer, and the great banker cannot!
order a private sunset, or add one ray to the mag,
nificencc of night. The same air swells all lungs.
% The same blood swells all veins. Each one possesses;
really only his own thoughts and his own
Soul .and bodv?these are the property
ly-which a man owns. All that is valuable is to
be had for nothing in this world. Genius, beauiy,
and love are not bought and sold. You
may buy a rich bracelet., but -.not a welbturned
arm to wear it?a pearl nedklace,!but not a pretty
throat with which it shall vie. The richest
banker on earth would vriirily offer a'fortune to V>o
able to write a verse like T>yron. 'One comes
into the world naked and goes out naked; the
fineness of a bit of lincn.for a shroud is not much.
Man is a handfttl of'day, which turns quickly
back again into du;t.
-
Oiling Harness.?In oiling harness, let them
be washed clean, in warm water, and when very
nearly dry, have a tub with warm water in it,
and into this.pour about one pint of nice, fine
oil?then immerse the different pieces of harness
into this- oil slowly, and take it hem out immediately,
passing them-through the hand to take off
the most of the oil that adheres to them, and
hang thorn up to dry. This is.an easy, and effectual
way to oil bather, fly-straps, lines, Ac., and
may :be done without any waste of oil or time.
Some prefer tanners' oil for their harness?some
think common lamp oil, and some seem to think
none at all, will do. But harness should be well
washed and oiled twice a year at least, and in
the long run the best oil pays the best; coarse
oil does not penetrate the leather, but forms a
kind 01 gum, to which du<t, hair, Ac. adhere, and
rots the leather. Old harness, that has not been
'Used to oil, is very likely to break, after an oiling
if it is used much. Therefor a little uultcl t?l
lene is bettor for -them.
B A little lainnblaek niixed with the oil.
will give tlio harness a fine jet black npjiearanec
by rubbing them with a woolen cloth.

A man made application a few days since for
insurance on a building situated in a village
where there was no fire engine. In answer to
the question, 'what are rtiie facilities for extinguishing
fires?' he wrote St rains sometimes!'
From the Cincinnati Commercial
l Strange! That so many who are aillicted n itli a
Cough thatisgraduatiy wearing tbcui down, and slowly,
but8urely stealing them into thai m~*dlul disece.
Consumption?that disease whteh carries oil' thousands
daily, are doing nothing, or what is worse than nothing,
gorging themselves with nostrums,. that pufl'ed
to the skies for cures they are said to have ctJected on
some foreign or unknown persons, when they , can be
positively cured by using Dr. Rogers's Compound Syrup
of Liverwort and Tar, which still continues to effect
the most wonderful cures ever recorded in the
annals of medicine. A fact which is proved by reference
to the vast number of certificates which may be
seen by calling ou tiie agent. For sale at J. Df.uay's

y ID" Tlifl following is from the pen of Wm. H
! Levison, Esq., the distinguished editor of the U
S. [Military and Naval Argus, under date New
I. York. January 26, 1850. What could be more
conclusive ?
" It is seldom we permit ourselves to occupy
a space in these columns to speak +n praise of any
t article in ihe patent, mtfbicin'e way; but When we
see the life of a fellow-creature saved by the use of
any medicine whatever, we consider it as our
right, it not our duty, to give a simple statement
of facts, that others may, in like manner, be benefitted.
The,ca6e which has induced us to pen
this article was that of a young lady of our acquaintance,
who by freguent exposure to the night air,
s contracted a Cold which settled on the Lungs be.
fore its ravages could be stayed. (This occurred
- two years ago this winter) Various remedies
5- wpre used, but with very little effect or benefit.?
_ The Cough grew worse, with copious ex-pectorav
tiou, and the sunken eye, apd pale,%ollovt^heeks,
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its
- worst on her delicate frame. The family physician
was consulted, and although he would not admit
to the.ya?rtg4ady that she really had the Consumption,
yet he would give no encouragement as
C m a cure. At this.crisis-Jier mother was persoa
ded to make use of a bottle of Dr. Rogers' Compound
Syrup of Liverwort wid Tar, and we aro
happy to state she was perfectly cifred in less than
three-months by this medicine alone, after even
e ;hope was destroyed. It is useless 1o comment on
^ such a case as this, for the simple trufh will reach
g where polished fiction never can. If any doubt
f the authenticity of this statement, let them call at
this office.?V. S. Military and Naval Argus, No.
