Correspondence of the Charlestoa Courier.
Washington, March 13. 1
The harmony of the democratic party Buffers j
daily from the fierce disputes among its mem- (
bers. It is alleged by the Republic that the par- (
ty could not now unite and carry any party '
measure in the House. There is much ill will 1
between the state-right's democrats and the ,
union democrats ; ana also between the friends <
of the old party leaders and those of the younger
democracy. Most of the discussion in the 1
House have reference of late to these feuds, and
. are well calculated to* promote them. Yester- '
day, some words passed in debate between Mr. '
Brown of Mississippi, and his colleague, Mr.
Wilcox; the tormer a statengnt s ana tne laiier i
a union democrat, and several blows passed between
them on the floor and in presence of the
House. .Considerable confusion followed, and
the parties were separated and were arrested by
the Surgeant at-Arms. The two gentlemen
apologized to the House, and I learn that they f
subsequently reconciled the matter between themselves,
i
It has been lately intimated in advices from
^ Europe that the larger continental powers are :
preparing to absorb the weaker ones. There
may be some truth in this, and it is quite certain
b that all these powers are armed or are arming,
^ as if expecting a shock of arms. This may or
may not ultimately concern us. But it is admitted
that this country is in some respects very
deficient in its defences, especially on the sea- ,
board. The artillery ann has been much neglect- i
ed, and, indeed, it is scarcely to be said that we
have any artillery. There are now but two bat
terics of the flying artillery in the service; and !'
the artillery companies have been drilled as in- j
fantry.
The Government is subjected, of late, to the
reproach of suffering the drafts of its agents, given
for array supplies, to be protested. This is
not| only a proof of bad management somewhere,
but it results in a loss, in two ways, to the Government.
It subjects the Govern met to damages
on the protested bills, and also serves to enhance
the price charged for all government supplies.
The. drafts referred to were on Quarter
Master General Jessup's department. He had
no money to pay, appropriations being exhausted.
It appears that the fault is with Congress,
for they cut down the estimates of this department,
at t'ae last session, and left upon it the
necessity of going beyond the amount appropriated?all
ol? which was predicted. The deficien- j
cy bill furnishes the means to pay these bills,
but the House has been too much engaged in
other objects to take it up. Gen. Jessup is in
the mean time censured by rome of the members
for not keeping the expenses within the aj>propriation?which
was probably impossible,
without exposing the army suffering and loss.
Beuhcm.?Alliance with. JRuxsia.?The following
is an extract of a letter dated Brussels
February 19, 1852:
A Convention has been concluded between
our government (the Belgian) and Russia, whereby
the latter engages to furnish 100,000 men
for the defence of our territory, in case it should
be invaded, or seriously meuaced by France.
Should the Baltic be open, these troops (including
the Imperial Guards) are to be transported
by a Russian fleet to Antwerp.
Prussia promises no assistance to a like extent.
The object of the present mission of the Prince
de Ligne to Berlin is to arrange the modus i
operandi. '
Our own army numbers 90,000, of whom 70,000
would take the field, and the remainder occupy
our fortresses.
Holland, interested in the protection of the
Luxembourg, agrees to furnish a contingent of
30,000.
Hopes are entertained that England?as one
of the powers guaranteeing the independence of
Belgium?will co-operate with a fleet in the
Scheldt, and a garrison for the citadel of Antwerp.?Baltimore

A Wife Murdered by her Husband?Supposed
Effects of Intemperance.?Between eight
and nine o'clock yesterday evening John Mulloy,
an Irishman, residing at No. 140 1-2 East Thirteenth-street,
while under the influence of liquor,
appears to have quarrelled with his wife, who
had two little children, and in his passion he
killed her by blows and straggling. Alarm was
instantly given, and the police of the Seventeenth
ward were called in, who found the mother
stretched on the floor a lifeless corpse, and the
two little children ciying and w eeping around her.
The husband was instantly arrested by officers

a dispossession warant was issued against
him by the lanlord, which is supposed to have
been the cause of the quarrel between him and
his wife.?N. Y. Herald, ISfA Inst.
Great Freshet?Canajoharie Inundated?Canajokarie,
March 10.?The Canajoharie
creek broke up last night, and nearly destroyed
the village of Canajoharie, doing great damage
to property and carrying away a large amount
of merchandise. The basements and first floors
of many of the dwellings are submerged.
This village presents the most perfect picture
of desolation ever seen. The streets are all filled
with ice from two to three feet in depth. The
water got choked at the head of the aqueduct
by the breaking up of the ice in the creek, and
the whole village, for about three hours, was sub
merged. The cellars are an nnea to tne tops
with ice. Much damage has been done. The
street bridge over the creek was raised from its
place and carried into the head of the aqueduct
and broken in pieces. The danger is now over,
and the water is passing the aqueduct freely.?

A Mammoth Hotel.?The Metropolitan Ho- ,
tel, about to beerected on Broadway, New York, <
will cost over half a million of dollars. It is to
be 6>x stories high, have five hundred rooms, and :
each room will have gas, and hot and cold water. ,
There will be five miles of pipe in the building i
and one mile of halls. There are to be 550 '
mirrors, costing $15,000. Most of these will
come from Belgium, and two of them are nearly
one hundred teet square. The silver ware will
oort $14,000; furniture $150,000; plate glass, 1
for windows, $35,000.
