Ax Alleged Fugitive Slave.?An attempwas
made in Naw York on Saturday last to art
rest a colored man named Jerry Van Horn, employed
as a waiter in the Irving House, who
was alleged to be the fugitive slave of Mr. Andrew
Armrtrong. Before the arrest could bccffccted,
however, lie escaped to Canada.
The value of all the milk^old in Massachusetts
thfi vear ending June 1,1850, was 8275,887. I
Dedham is the largest town in the "milky way," j
having sold ?45,000 worth. The abo\ e does not 1
^ include the milk made into butter and chees.

"Courier" states that the call for the meeting in
that city to nominate Mr. Webster for the Presidency
has obtained seven thousaud signatures.
Philosophers, say, that shutting the eyes makes
the-sense of hearing more acute. A wag suggests
that this accounts for the many closed eyes
which are seen in churches nearly every Sunday.
Wool Crop in Ohio.?The farmers of Ohio
are said to have realized three millions of dollars
during the past season frcra the wool crop.

for a few days," said a merchant to his clerk.
"I must get away from business a few days, for
my health, but I plainly see that I shall have no
leisure as long as I continue to advertise."
Tunnel under the Hudson.?A bill was introduced
into the Legislature of New York on

made, and the plan is considered feasible. It is
believed that a perfect work eau be constructed,
with a double track, and an easy grade, for half

| It is stated that 40,000 persons were carried
off by cholera last year, in the Island of Jamai
ea.
While the Express train was passing Goldsboro,'
N. C., on Monday evening, the horses attached
to the Newbern stage became frightened
and ran away, breaking the driver's back. Mr.
Colbert, the contractor, had his legs broken, and
the passengers sustained considerable injury.
Tax ox Passengers.?The corporation of
San Francisco has imposed a tax of one dollar
on every passenger arriving at that port. On its
payment, the passenger is to receive a certificate
fc which will admit him into the hospital, as a city
I patient, at any time within six months.

whom the jury had rendered a verdict of manslaughter,
with a recommendation to mercy,
was brought up for sentence. Before announcing
the penalty of the offence his honor, in an able
an feeling manner, remarked upon the nature
of the crime of which the prisoner had been
found guilty, and exhorted him by various dear
considerations to improve his incarceration in a radical
reformation of principle and habit, so that
hereafter he might be a useful member of society
The judgement of the Court was: lie pay a
fine of ?],000 and be imprisoned securely in
the jail of Richland for the period of twelve
months.
Several other sentences were passed for minor
cases of assault and batten'.?South Carolinian.
Senator Hunter is about introducing a bill in
the Senate, changing the relative value of gold
and silver, that is rcduciug the standard value
of silver, to save it from exportation and hoarding.
It is also rej?orted that in the Ways and
Means Committee of the House, a bill is pre
pared to lay a seignorage of 1 per centum 011 all
moneys coined at the Mints.
Liverpool Cotton market.
Liverpool, Feb. 20.
Fetley and Go's Circular states: We have again
to report au extensive business in Cotton,
the sales of the week amounting to 74,300 bales
and of the previous week 57,820 bales, showing
that a large portion of the entire stock has been
turned over during the fortnight. Accounts
from America, together with light shipments for
this market, and the demand being great for
other places, has had some effect here; and then
again the buoyant state of the Manchester market;
with an extensive demand for goods and
wares, and the absence of stocks, must have given
great encouragement to buyers.
We find spinners have purchased largely to
cover a contracts entered into for future delivery.
These combined have caused a considerable
amount of animation in the market, and had it
not Wn that importers continued to supply the
demand, an advance of imjtortance mu*t have
taken place. As it is, however, we cannot call
the improvement much more than 1-8(1 ]>er lb.
r and it is chiefly upon middling and the better
.qualities. Speculators took 14,500 bales of
American; 1,000 Pernambuco; 170 Bahia,
and 7,040 Surat, Exporters took 3,080 American;
20 Pernambuco; 70 Egyptian, and 1,510
bales Bengal and Surat, leaving the trade 46;R00
bales. The sales to-day amount to 8,000 bales.
Roman Catholics in the U. States,?
The Catholic Almanac for 1852 has full statistics
of the Roman Catholic Church in this
country, compiled mostly from official sources,
from which it appears that there are in the
whole United States 6 archbishops, 26 bishops,
],385 priests, 1,41] churches, and a Catholic
population of 1,980,000, which includes 115,C00
in Oregon, the Californias, New iMexico,
and the Indian Territory.
In England and Scotland there are 694
churches and chapels and 972 priests, and in
Ireland 2,205 churches and 2,252 priests.
