(will be responded to with equal unanimto b}'
the House. On the 3d instant, in the Senate,
- Mr. Winston offered the fo'lowing joint resolution,
which alter debate, was unanimously
adopted :
Whereas, from many indications of popular
feeling in some of the States of this (Jovernment,
and from the speeches and acts of many
public men, high in the confidence of their own

constituents and ot tlie people 01 mo cuiieu
g? States, we are led to the belief that a spirit of
|| interference in the political affairs of the Europeau
continent prevails to so great an extent
as to induce the fear, tiiat. for the want of cool
or reflection, we may he imbrued ill all the trouB
bles and difficulties of the political affairs of
I nation and people far removed from us.
De it therefore resolved by the State of AlaI
bama in General Assembly convened, Thai
we hold it to be the duty of the Government
and the people of the United States to cultivate
I relations of amity and good will with all nn
tions of the earth. " In peaee, to treat all as
friends?in war as enemies." And to have enI
tangling alliances with none, and to practice
I literally the doctrines of non-intervention.
s Resolved. That the Governor be requested to
m - forward these resolutions to our Senators and
1 Representatives in Congress, with a request to
k Jay the same before their respective bodies.
CONGRESS.
In the Senate, on Saturday, 1 Oth inst., Mr.
Sebastain introduced a bill granting land to Arkansas
for railroad purposes.
Mr. Geyer introduced a bill allowing Missouri
to tax all lands sold in that State, from
the day of sale.
A resolution offered by Mr. Flench, directing
an inquiry into the expediency of reporting
a bill granting to all railroads the right of way
through the public lands, was adopted.
A resolution offered by Mr. Shields, authorp
izing the employment of a draughtsman to mark
upon the maps cf the Senate the condition ol
8 the public lauds?that is: sold, unsold, survey?
ed, and not surveyed?was adopted,
r Several private bills ordered to be engrossed
were taken up and passed.
The Senate, on motion of Mr. Gwin, took
up the bill directing the President to appoint a
board of officers to make a survey of the bay
of San Francisco, to select a site for a navy

Visit of Kossuth to Mr. Clay.? Kossuth
paid a visit to Mr. Clay on Friday afternoon.
The interview lasted for an hour, and is said to
have been very cordial and friendly. The National
Intelligencer says Mr. Clay frankly dis(
. closed hissentiments and at considerable length,
as to the policy of this country in reference to
, the question of intervention in European affairs
| Mr. Clay, as it has been understood, is opposed
to any change in this policy deeming it best
not only for ourselves, but likewise for the
down-trodden populations of Europe, that we
should pursue, as hitherto, the even tenor of
our way.
It c? sts the People of the United States fifteen
millions^of dollars a 3ear for newspapers
nndotlur periodicals, and these newspapers
and periodicals are as essential to their safety
and happiness as the roofs over their heads, and
more so than the army ard navy, which costs
twice as much.

Thk Arnold Family.? A Norwich paper
says : The last remaining relative of Benedict
Arnold (who honored Norwich by being born
here) was carried to the poor-house three or
four days ago by one of our select-men. She
was couisin t<? the traitor, and remembers him
well, and spoke with seeming resentment and
indignation of his having been "driven out of
the country." She is ninety-two years old,
and wnen taken from the miserable hovel
where she and a sister of her's, who died three
or four years ago, had lived, shunned, solitary;
and in abject poverty, for many years, the poor
old creature was sitting without a fire to warm
herself by, although the day was one of the
coldest of the season. We have never, been
able to learn thatthore was any reason, except
in the leprosy which clung to the traitor whom
it was their misfortune to be allied to, why this
woman and her sister, neither of whom was
ever married, should have gone through life excluded
from social life and intercourse by the
inexorable ban of society. Yet such is the
fact, and it furnishes a striking commentary
upon the depth and strength of that feeling ol
loathing and execration with which the name
of Benedict Arnold is linked, now and forever,
in the popular mind.
r The effects or Gin. ?An English paper
speaking of intemperance remarks: Mr. Walkley,
coroner for the country of Middlesex, ar
excellent chemist, and a physician of no mear
order, says: "Gin is the best friend I have; ii
causes me to have annually a thousand more
inquests than I should otherwise hold. I have
reason to believe that 10,000 to 15,000 persons
die in London every year from the effect o
(Jin-drinking, on whom no inquests are held."?
CJnpt. Brunton, of the Navy, adds: " l)urin?j
the late war, almost every accident 1 witnesset
011 board ships was owing to drunkenness.?
I hold spiri'ual liquors to be more dangerous
than gunpowder."
An editor down South, who served font

that it is hard to keep from cheating somebody.
