Our Washington correspondent, writing under
date of the 6th insL, states that on Monday
last oar Senator, the Hon. A. P. Butler,
presented, in the U. S. Senate, the Memorial
of the Chamber of Commerce of this city,
praying for the erection of a light hodse in this
ha-bor. Our correspondent has no doubt, he
says, that Congress, at the present Session,
Lwill make liberal appropriations tor tbe improvement
of rivers and harbors, arid that the deepening
of the channel in this harbor will doubtless
be provided for. He also states that greatsensation
bad been produced in Washington
by the news that Austria bad assumed an attitude
unfriendly to Great Britain. He thinks
that the rumor is, perhaps, only in anticipation
of what will occur.?Charleston Courier.
Pork packtxu,?Mi*. Joseph Ramsey's
Slaughtering establishment4?situated about
one mile out of town?is now in successful
operation, and the well fed porkers are yielding
their last accounts at the rate of 100 to 150
per day. Mr. Ramsey does up the killing
_ v and packing business in a style quite a la Cincinnati.
He will slaughter this season at
least 3000 hogs. It is interesting to witnness

The Baltixohk Convention.?The National
Democratic Committee which met in
Washington fast week, has determined to hold
the Democratic National Convention in this
city, on the first Tuesday in June next, for the
nomination of candidates for President and
Vice IVesident of the United States, The
number of delegates from each State is not to
exceed the number of Presidential electors to
^ which it is entitled. It appears that at the
^ meeting ot the committee, which determined
these "matters, all the States of the Union were
( represented except South Carolina. Tl?e chair
man (B. F," Hallet, of Mass.,) announced the
receipt of a letter from Gen. James M. Com
mander, the member of the committee for South
Carolina, regretting that he should he unable
to attend the meeting of the National Commit
tee, and authorizing the chairman to vote for
the second Monday in Jnne as the time, auc
, Baltimore as the place, for the assembling oi
the convention, with the hope that the delihera
tions of the committee might be harmonious
So General Commander, we presume, wil
again represent Sooth Carolina in the Nationa!
Democratic' Convention.? South Carolinian.

Spbakixo Wkcl or Others.?ffthe disj o
-sition to sneak well of others were universally
prevalent, the world would become a comparative
paradise. The opposite disposition is the
Pandora box which, when opened, fills ever}
house and every neighborhood with pain and
*- sorrow. How many enmities and heartburnings
flow from this source! Envy, jealousy,
and the malignant spirit of evil, when they
find vent by the lips, go forth on their mision
like fool fiends, to blast the repetation and
peace or others. Every one has his imperfections,
and the conduct of the best: there will
be occasionally faults, which might seem to
justify animadversion. It is a good rule however,
when there is occasion for faolt finding
to do it privately to the erring one. This may
prove salutary. It is a proof of interest in the
individual, which will be generally taken kindly,
if the manner of doing it is not offensive.
The common and unchristian rule, on the contrary
is to proclain the failing of others to all
but themselves. This is unchristrain and
ahows a despicable heart.
A Knave Abroad.?A fellow, pretending
to be deaf and dumb, has been hoaxing
our honest villagers of late, rather successfully.
We confess ourselves to have been
fairly taken in, but we do not mind it at all,
08 several shrewd judges of human nature
have been equally duped. The rascal was
certainly an admirable actor of the part he
had undertaken, as proved by the very general
gulling of our community. Several
there arc, however, whoaver that they knew
all the time he would prove to be an imposter.
"Did'nt I tell you so V said an old lady,
when her spouse announced the circumstance
of the cow's eating up the grindstone.
There is apt to be one in every family who
always knew that things were going to happen
after they had happened. On the evening
of the Dumb Knight's detection, he was
' well blackened and partly shaven bv our
bohoys, and then turned loose upon the wide
world. Look out for the scamp. We dislike
to have to state that the man was a
printer by trade.
The names given bv this vagrant are, first,
Roberts ; secondly, Whipple ; thirdly. Bob
belt; which last he aitirms is nis reai name
He is about 5 feet 10 inches in height, and
has an exceedingly vacant and stupid expression
of countenance. Thinking that he
may endeavor to practice upon the sympathies
of other neighboring communities, we
have thought it but right to give him this
prominent notice?EdgefieM Advertiser.
